The ViewLondon Review
The Coach and Horses is perched opposite the junction where Stoke Newington Church Street meets the High Street. The sister pub to the Oak and Pastor in Tufnell Park, it was originally an old coach house and dates back to the 1700s and is now a thriving watering hole for N16 residents.
The Venue
Painted in traditional black and cream colours, with rows of picnic benches outside, The Coach and Horses is a classic north London pub. Dark wooden tables and pews line the inside of the building, with red cushioned bar stools and a lampshade propped up in the corner. Widescreen TVs showing the football and rugby are a modern update to ensure that it draws the crowds during the weekend’s sporting fixtures.
The Atmosphere
Largely due to its prime location on the High Street between Dalston, Stoke Newington proper, and Stamford Hill, it is always full of punters whether it’s a week night or a relaxed Sunday afternoon of sport, and the outside smoking area always seems to be a big hit. The atmosphere is always fun, friendly and jovial, with great staff, a well-kept bar and a nice, local feel to the place.
The Food
Continuing the growing trend for outsourcing food, The Coach and Horses offers a rather delicious Thai menu, with a range of curries, stir fries, seafood, noodles and rice to soak up the beer. Choose from popular options such as the medium hot green curry with aubergine, green beans, bamboo shoots and Thai basil in coconut milk or the red curry with aubergine, red pepper, bamboo shoot and Thai basil in coconut milk (both £6.95). Stir fries are also tempting and cater for the vegetarians with options like the pad king – with ginger, mushroom, peppers and onion, whilst the seafood menu offers mixed seafood (£7.50), fried prawns with garlic and mushroom (£7.95) or steamed sea bass with soy sauce, ginger and onion (£10.95).
The Drink
The range of drinks is all-encompassing – if you’re a lager drinker choose from San Miguel, Carlsberg, Heineken, Kronenbourg or Staropramen on draught, real ale lovers can choose from Black Sheep, St Austell Tribute or Dark Star’s Hop Head, or even a Guinness, whilst cider drinkers can have Bulmers or one of the bottled ciders behind the bar. The spirit range is decent, with some great rums, whiskies, gins and vodkas on show behind the bar. Wines can be bought by the small, medium and large glass, or by the bottle, and range from a £12.50 Italian white, right up to a £25 sauvignon blanc, whilst reds range from a £14 Italian red to a £24 rioja.
The Last Word
With its great selection of beers, wines and spirits, and its reasonably priced Thai menu, The Coach and Horses is a fabulous local pub that caters for everyone.
