The ViewLondon Review
Along this part of Fulham Road, a stretch littered with eateries and pubs, there is a certain lack of late night bars for locals to go to. With the addition of Coalition, locals can now find a raucous party on their doorstep.
The Venue
When you first enter Coalition, your initial reaction may well be that it's a small but perfectly formed bar. It can be found on the Parsons Green side of Fulham Road and it resides a few doors down from The Fest beer hall. Outside, it has several tables which are sheltered from the elements, and its large window front is quite appealing.
On the inside it follows a sleek black theme, with dimmed lights, brown felt banquettes and red leather bar stools. The bar is well stocked and it is easy to order a drink. At the back there is an enclosed area, which would be suitable for big groups and maintains a certain level of privacy, whilst not being too closed off from the vibe of the main bar.
Next door are their VIP rooms, which are designed for large groups or private parties. The surroundings are more plush than the rest of the venue and it has its own bar, decked outdoor area and is generally quite swish. However the piece de resistance is definitely the downstairs private room. It is huge and looks more like a club. Dressed in red, it has its own bar and looks like a perfect space for events or big parties.
The Atmosphere
You’ll tend to find locals from Fulham and Chelsea at Coalition. The bar staff maintain a high level of professionalism at all times, whilst being chatty and making you feel at ease.
The Food
At the moment, the only thing they have on offer are bar snacks and Thai food. The snacks consist of small plates, with choices like chicken satay, spring rolls and prawn toast for £4.50 each. Thai mains include pad Thai, green curry and the like, all for £6.95.
The Drink
When it comes to the drink at Coalition, the obvious choice are the cocktails. The menu is divided into classics (£6.50), and Coalition (£6.90), which are their signature mixes. The problem with their own cocktails is that the descriptions of the drink doesn’t give you an indication of what is actually contained. For instance, the Golden Cadillac simply states:
‘Park One Of These Baby’s On Your Table’ which is unhelpful to say the least. And even though, when the cocktails arrive, they are big and plentiful, they are haphazardly assembled and mediocre at best. The Jersey Belle, on the other hand, is a modern take on a cosmo, with hints of pear and orange essence and is actually quite palatable. Drinks might not be of the highest standard but they do have a very tempting happy hour from 5pm-8pm, Monday-Friday, where you can get decent discounts on selected bottles of beer, wines and cocktails.
The Last Word
Coalition is situated in an attractive area for wining and dining and, even though the cocktails aren’t anything to write home about, once people realise its potential for a lively drink, it’ll be booked out constantly.
