The ViewLondon Review
An organic, health conscious, eco friendly cafe on Brick Lane. Doesn’t sound shocking or groundbreaking, but Coffee @ 154 has a trendy, laid back vibe that makes it addictive. The VenuePolished green bricks set apart this corner cafe from the haphazard selection of buildings on Brick Lane. The large windows show a room crammed full of hip East Londoners grabbing a coffee, surfing the internet, or casually reading a book. Generally they all look relaxed and calm, so it makes you venture inside as well. Exposed brick walls, paper cup light contraptions, colourful posters and art, and a neon red sign stating ‘World is yours’. These are all typical calling cards of East London chic and make the place stand out from the run-of-the-mill chain cafes that litter the streets of London. There seem to be two seating sections, one full of brightly coloured plastic chairs and tables, the other a few closely packed old fashioned brown leather sofas. Both give customers a chance to lounge around or grab a quick drink.
The AtmosphereThe place is always buzzing, probably due to the fact that everyone in the vicinity needs caffeine breaks at frequent intervals, so the atmosphere is vibrant and lively throughout the day. There’s a mixture of people within the cafe, with some chatting away to their friends whilst slipping further into the sofa cushions, some bolt upright tapping away at their laptops (there’s free wi fi) and some just gently nibbling on a cookie whilst reading their book in an armchair in the corner, a million miles away. Everyone seems to be using it as their own giant living room, feeling extremely relaxed and comfortable spending as long as they like there, but without the typical student mess.
The FoodFood like healthy sandwiches, salads and soups are served in small cardboard boxes which all look the same, so who knows what goodies the person next to you is munching on.
The DrinkThe blackboard over the service bar shows off Coffee @’s large choice of organic, fair trade coffees and teas, with everything from rich macchiato to refreshing peppermint tea, which are all served in simple paper cups. Fruit freaks will love the huge choice of smoothies and juices to get their vitamin fix and on hot summer days there are delicious frappes to cool you down. There are some unique specials, such as interesting coffee concoctions like Choc Mocha Glory – white and dark chocolate, espresso and cream. Not for the faint hearted, but these frequently change to give regulars something new.
The Last WordCoffee @’s motto is ‘Quality espresso is in the truth of life’. They’ve adhered to this exceptionally, whilst also creating a chic café atmosphere that will make Coffee @ many people’s favourite haunts.
