The ViewLondon Review
Billed as an ale and port house with a better than average choice of wine and Champagne, including the exclusive Davy’s wines, Cooperage appeals to an after work city crowd with a taste for fine wine.
The Venue
Taking its name from a place where a Cooper makes wine barrels, the Cooperage is part of the Davy’s wine bar chain. It is situated in the railway arches beneath London Bridge station, next door to the London Dungeons opposite Hays Galleria.
The venue is split across two rooms with a dining room at the rear and a bar at the front. The dark wood decor, brick walls, leather sofas, gas lamps, big upturned beer barrels (which double up as tables) and huge open fireplace make the Cooperage a cosy affair and a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the streets outside. A plasma screen shows terrestrial sporting events.
The Atmosphere
The relaxed atmosphere and friendly efficient staff at Cooperage help the local workers unwind after a busy day in the office. For those who still have work to do there is wi fi access throughout so expect to see the odd laptop positioned atop an upturned beer barrel.
The Food
Food at Cooperage comprises mainly hot and cold sandwiches, main plates, salads, snacks and desserts with prices averaging at the £10 mark for a main dish of Cumberland sausage and mash, Angus steak burger, rib eye steak sandwich and Scottish smoked salmon. Easy to nibble on bar snacks include sausages, chips, scampi and Thai spring rolls - ideal for the busy after work crowd.
The Drink
There’s a good selection of specialty teas, coffees, soft drinks, bottles and draught beers on tap, including the seasonal Whitstable Bay ale, Davy’s Old Whallop and Davy’s lager. Davy’s own label wines start at £15 but expect to pay £65 for the more interesting Chassagne Montrachet 2003. Champagne is served by the bottle, flute and tankard. Vintage ports are decanted daily and wine is available to buy by the bottle and glass with the majority of bottles priced at the £20-£25 mark.
The Last Word
Cooperage hits the spot for the wine loving after work crowd.
