Cottons is the best Caribbean restaurant in London. I've eaten in many restaurants that claim to be Caribbean restaurants. Do not be confused with the many take aways that profess to be eateries as they are mearly just patty shops masquerading as dining establishments.

If you want great cocktails, with good service, good music, good atmosphere and, even though its not typical Caribbean homestyle cooking, good food, then Cottons restaurant in Chalk Farm is second to none.

Cottons has a nice atmosphere although the authenticity appears to have been lost. We had jerk chicken that was far too sweet and curry goat that was tasteless and full of fatty meat. The Cottons starters were better than the mains, and the swordfish better than the jerk chicken and curry.

Cottons has a warm sexy lively atmosphere, the decor is great, it's a small space but they have done it out really well using lots of red with interesting little touches, there are three distinct areas on three different levels and all are different, all fun to be in.

The menu is Caribbean and sophisticated, unfortunately the food can be hit or miss, sometimes sublime, occassionally a bit disappointing. Starters are always a major event, surprising combinations of flavours beautifully presented. But main courses can be a bit samey and unexciting if you're unlucky. Also it's quite pricey to eat a full meal with drinks. We generally end up with £50/head.

I'd say it's a great place to go with a group or on a date. Hopefully the food will be up to scratch and to be honest, even if it isn't the environment is good enough to ensure you should still have a great night out. Do try the cocktails too, they have a wide range and in particular the non-alchoholic ones are great for anyone staying sober or pacing themselves!

And of course, you can just go to the bar at Cottons, they often have a DJ and you can check out the vibe with a drink before deciding if it's your kind of place and you want to eat there too.
