My friends and I used to really like this pub for a Sunday roast – slightly more expensive than other pub roasts, but the quality has always made it completely worthwhile. When we went there yesterday, however, the servings of meat – excluding the chicken – were much smaller than they used to be (two small slices of beef/pork/lamb, and despite the staff’s counter-argument, no they were NOT thicker slices than before), there were also only two small poorly cooked roast potatoes per plate, and both the meat and the separate bowl of vegetables were stone cold within about two minutes. To rub salt into the wound, the prices had also gone up! When our table was cleared and we were asked if everything was alright, we said no, and all we received in response was a mumbled “oh, sorry”. Later my friend complained to a different member of staff and (after having contested the ‘thicker slices’ claim) was told that there have been changes to the management and, as a result, also to the way the kitchen is run. Still no apology, though.
I’m used to having to book well in advance or not bother turning up between 12:30 and about 4pm in this pub on a Sunday, as it was always absolutely packed, but this weekend we had to vacate our table for the next reservation at 3pm and had no trouble finding another 6-seater table free. If other regular customers have had the same experiences we have since the management changed, I’m not surprised that the pub’s popularity is dropping.
In fairness, the staff behind the bar were very polite and served us quickly, and the atmosphere is very relaxed and welcoming (for children as well as adults). I would happily go there for a drink or two, it's a nice escape from the more hectic pubs along Upper Street. However, there’s absolutely no way I’d pay that much money for a meal of that poor quality again; after being regulars for a couple of years my friends and I have made a unanimous decision to never eat there again.
The Crown is a very relaxed, old style pub.
Unlike most places in Islington that seem more interested in 'image' rather than substance.
very friendly staff;very good food;and a relaxed atmosphere.
(p.s.try the homemade pork scratchings).
A true old style local.
