The ViewLondon Review
This takeaway juice bar is the perfect pitstop during a busy shopping trip at Canary Wharf. What it lacks in decor and atmosphere it makes up for with a large menu of nutrient-packed juices, smoothies and snacks that won't break the bank. The VenueCrussh's decor will certainly wake you up when you walk in - it has a garish bright orange and green colour scheme that will leave you craving a healthy smoothie to help you calm down. Perhaps this was designed with the colourful vitamin-packed fruit and veg of Crussh's menu in mind, but it seems like it would better suit a bar sponsored by Sunny Delight. Still this is a takeaway outlet, and, unlike Crussh's other store in Canary Wharf's Jubilee Place, it has no seating, so you won't really need to spend much time inside anyway!
The AtmosphereAgain the thing to bear in mind is that this is a takeaway, so apart from the friendly staff and the patient queue of waiting customers, there's not much other atmosphere to notice! What can be said however is that this juice bar is located right in the heart of Canary Wharf's bustling shopping centre, and is the ideal place to stop and refuel during a grueling shopping trip.
The FoodCrussh has a large menu of healthy snacks and salads. There's a breakfast menu, taking in porridge, yoghurts and pastries, and for lunch a selection of toasties, sandwiches and wraps, soups, salads and sushi. The shitake mushroom sushi wrap (about £4.00) with classic soy and vinegar dressing comes in a generous portion, packed with juicy shitake mushrooms and a sizable serving of soy sauce. One drawback, however, is the way it’s divided in two, which makes it quite hard to negotiate on the go, especially after adding the drippy soy sauce.
Another good bet is the roast duck, pomegranate and wild rice Super Salad bowl (about £5.00), featuring Basmati rice, wild rice, orange segments, oriental roast duck, pomegranate, watercress and lamb lettuce and an orange and garlic dressing. The combination of these flavours is tantalising, and the portion hearty, with the duck well cooked and the combination of rice, fruit and veg tasting really healthy. One reservation though the deluge of dressing provided, which, while tasty, leaves the last third of the bowl almost submerged. Finish it all off with a sumptuous chocolate brownie (£1.00) or a healthy fruit and nut pot (from £1.25), packed with high quality nuts and dried fruit, at a very reasonable price.
The DrinkFresh juices and smoothies are the focal point of Crussh's menu. There's a large range of exotic concoctions to sample, with an emphasis on the healthy. The Green Goddess combo juice (from £2.65 - £4.50) proves to be a healthy, refreshing experience. Made with a quirky mix of kiwi, pear, apple, lime celery, cucumber and spinach, it’s sweet with a smooth moreish texture. The full size is large, and just about worth the price tag, though one drawback is that the drink begins to separate towards the end - as is the way with all-natural produce.
The smoothie menu is large and varied, with classic combos like Strawberry Cool (strawberries, banana and orange juice) mixed with off-the-wall creations such as Chilli Mango (mango, banana, orange juice, lime and red chili). In true American juice bar style there are a range of boosters available, such as aloe vera, wheatgerm, and Echinacea and energy explosion, to give your smoothie the requisite extra kick. The Brainstorm super smoothie, while not representative of the whole menu, is a slight let down. Featuring apple, cranberries, banana, apple juice and a brainstorm booster, it doesn’t leave you feeling much brighter. While the ingredients are evidently fresh and the serving ample, you feel too much of the tartness of cranberry comes through at the expense of the other flavours, making it quite difficult to drink towards the end.
The Last WordOverall, Crussh at Central Tower is a great place to pick up a healthy lunch on the go, or a smoothie or juice that's bound to be fresh, nutrient-packed and palate-stimulating! The menu is large enough to please everyone (vegetarians included) and there are enough sweet treats for bit of indulgence - it's also the perfect healthy alternative to fatty fast food outlets like McDonalds.
