The ViewLondon Review

Review byHenrietta Clancy01/11/2007
Enjoy some vitamin-boosting, flu-fighting food and drink in a food chain outlet that manages to exude the friendly and relaxed atmosphere of a local cafe.

The Venue
Everything about this place is green, from the fact that it’s two minutes from Green Park tube to the organic menu and the decor within. Inside you’ll find a spacious seating area with the signature wicker seating and a giant wheatgrass poster claiming a wall, demonstrating Crussh’s unfailing faith in the superfood (which can, apparently, cleanse your blood).

The Atmosphere
With the addition of actual bunches of wheatgrass peppered around the eating area like overgrown potted plants, sitting in Crussh could be likened to eating in a jungle. A separate and efficient smoothie bar and some varied seating - choose from booths, tables or perch on stools overlooking Curzon Street - give this branch of Crussh a real personal touch.

The Food
The soup system at Crussh is fairly impressive and certainly accommodating, with a constantly changing flavour option beneath each of four categories, classic, organic, gourmet or chilli. These are further divided into Skinny (less than 100 cals), Low Fat (less than 3g fat) and Fat Free (less than 0.5g fat). Fresh, wholesome and hearty, they are crammed full of seasonal ingredients and added spicy twists. Add some freshly baked bread, croutons or wheat free bread to complete your liquid lunch.

The chilli chicken comes recommended, tender pieces of chicken, as opposed to pre-sliced, with a good level of spice. Sushi boxes, vegetarian or salmon, are certainly cheaper than expected. They are visibly fresh with the welcome addition of a Japanese take on a green salad, endamamme beans and all. Health Pots are precisely that, and the Super Foods is the healthiest of them all, with quinoa, chickpeas, cashews, organic pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame oil, tofu, beetroot sprouts, peas and spring onion. Gillian McKeith would be delighted with this little pot, which is crunchy and flavoured with some nutty and fragrant sesame oil. Finish the meal with anything from a shot of blueberries (literally, blueberries in a shot glass) to a pot of dried fruit and nuts or an oat-y cookie.

The Drink
The drinks menu consists of delicious, healthy and freshly pressed juices and natural smoothie shakes made with 98% fat free frozen yoghurt and there are options to suit the masses. The Fat Burner doesn’t taste as aggressive as it sounds – strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, blueberries, banana and apple juice – it is a tangy yet sweet blend of forest fruits. The Liquid Lunch, made with coconut, apple, pineapple and ginger, may well be the most cocktail-suggestive Combo Juice on the menu. It is labelled as an ideal snack substitute, but, divine as it is, if it’s appetite suppression you’re after a smoothie would probably do a better job. Additional bits of magic ingredients are plentiful, choose from the likes of the Energy Explosion Booster and the Brainstorm Booster. Every combination is made before your eyes in the smoothie kitchen.

The Last Word
Choose from an impressive variety of food and drink that’s been subjected to some experimental twists with delicious outcomes, and then walk away feeling smug about just how healthy you’ve been.
