The ViewLondon Review
Crussh boasts some ultra fresh ingredients transformed into an inspired array of juices, smoothies, salads, soups. This branch is a convenient location for BBC staff members to grab breakfast and lunch - be it on sight or on the go.
The Venue
Crussh is part of the huge cube which is one of the BBC buildings at White City, so in keeping with it’s neighbours it is uniformly glass fronted and fairly generic from the outside. Inside, however, is a different story. The decor vibrantly plays homage to the superfood wheatgrass, that which can reportedly cleanse your blood, with a giant green poster on the wall.
The Atmosphere
This is clearly the most popular lunchtime hangout for the BBC health conscious – a coffee shop, the canteen and a non-descript Italian place were until recently the only other options. If you choose to eat you healthy fare onsite, sit at a choice of round tables or perch on stools overlooking the BBC people traffic.
The Food
From salad bowls and pots, to wraps and sandwiches and soups - everything has been made with the freshest of ingredients in the adjoining Crussh kitchen. Not only that, everything on the menu has also been exposed to some form of exciting herb or spice, with even the most common pesto pasta and chicken Caesar dishes getting an overhaul. The daily chilli soup option is a popular staple: this bobs between beef chicken and vegetarian in a rich, thick tomato based soup with a kick. Add some freshly baked bread, croutons or wheat free bread to complete the meal.
The Super 7 salad bowl is vast but delicious – mixed leaves, roast tofu, broccoli, carrot, endamame, green peas, cucumber, mangetout, beetroot, baby corn and mixed seeds in a moreish Wasabi dressing. It’s audibly crunchy, bursting with flavour and so good for you that you may well reach you target 5-a-day in one sitting. Not quite as healthy as the other food that surrounds them on the shelves, the cakes and cookies are every bit as tasty. The almond slice is a rich, almost mousse-like treat with a strong nutty essence, and the honey oat cookie is sweet, light and ever-so-slightly squidgy in the middle.
The Drink
The drinks menu consists of delicious, healthy and freshly pressed juices and natural smoothie shakes made with 98 percent fat free frozen yoghurt. Every combination of which is made before your eyes in the smoothie kitchen. The Chilli Mango smoothie with mango, banana, orange juice, lime and red chilli delivers quite a kick but still retains its fruity sweetness. For something with slightly more lasting power go for the Breakfast Smoothie with banana, oats and yoghurt, or the Energy Explosion with cherries, banana, apple juice and a Booster. If you still feel that you haven’t gone far enough to ward off all the winters’ impending flu bugs, an extra shot of echinacea or spirulina can be added to your beverage for 50p. Alongside all of the usual suspects seasonal specials are definitely worth opting for and are usually advertised on the board outside. With such positive names such as Brainstorm, Fat Burner, Pineapple Pleasure and Energiser – how can you possibly resist?
The Last Word
BBC employees have hit the jackpot with the latest food outlet to open on sight – it certainly outdoes the canteen..
