I can't remember what my co-diner, Shanghai Johnny Reed, had but I had some kind of Russian sausage that was A1.

On my return back west my 83 year old mother said with warm nostalgia "Oh that place is still around!" + that more or less sums it up, an oasis of all that's good about London in the South Ken. desert of tourist vomitoriums.

Daquise is the only Polish restaurant I've ever been to so I didn't know what to expect. All I can say is you won't want to eat for the next couple of meals. Daquise inhabits a world where the Atkins diet never existed - loads of carbs and plenty of panckes, potatoes and cakes to tuck into to.
Bring an adjustable belt.

Well, if you haven't eaten Polish food before, Daquise is pretty typical, but also delightfully 'old school' in its approach to the decor as much as to what they produce in the kitchen. It's a straightforward, unfussy, 1950s interior, and the food is close to what you get in a Polish home. And believe me, this is high praise.

The prices, by the way, are as old-fashioned as the menu. Perish the thought that one day someone will want to modernise the place ... it would kill the essence of Daquise stone dead. This is where the Polish Government in exile used to meet, dammit, during the dark days of WWII. So please, Daquise, don't succumb to 'improvements': we love you just the way you are.
