The ViewLondon Review
This Jewish, New York, deli-style grill is extremely popular with the North West London set and seats in this place are as rare as some of the tender beef that’s served up.The VenueSituated on the Broadway in Mill Hill this restaurant is close to Mill Hill Broadway. Ideally positioned in the heart of Mill Hill the façade is a quick reminder of the nearby Rotisserie. Inside, simple, modern decor features on one side whilst high leather banquettes decked out in black together with separate eating areas and some good brickwork ensures a calm and serene dining layout.
The AtmosphereDon’t be surprised to find lots of yummy Jewish mummies both young and old who flock to this joint as a haven from a typical day. A popular venue with the local community who, for amongst other things, come for the salt beef. The mix of people ensures a lively and thriving ambiance whatever time of the day you come. It is strongly advised to book ahead at weekends as tables are like gold dust.
The FoodWith an equally good variety of dishes in the day as well as by night The Delisserie excels in delivering excellent tasty authentic cuisine that covers a wide choice from the grill. The day menu consists of tasty selections featuring Challah which is a traditional soft Jewish bread made with lots of eggs, which is made into a French toast with cinnamon and sugar. It’s worth waiting till the weekend to gorge on this as this is the only time it’s available. Other options include some smoky Vienna sausages served with scrambled free range eggs and toasted bagel.
As the night falls and the dinner menu comes out to play the Delisserie pulls out many excellent dishes from its rather large bag of tricks. It would be criminal to forgo the traditional of chicken soup with lockshen and knaidels. The lockshen is a fine pasta similar to vermicelli and is packed full of the chicken flavours whilst the knaidels are small dumplings that are made with traditional matzo meal or fine maize. This is a real pick me up for those long winter nights ahead. The sausages of Merguez lamb is spicy and comes with a creamy horseradish sauce that compliments the meat well.
For mains try the tastiest salt beef this side of North London is in the salt beef and chopped liver platter. The quality speaks for itself. Generous slices of meat are combined with a wholesome chopped liver which is seasoned perfectly and is finished with a latka, a classic Jewish potato pancake, or chips. Meanwhile the lamb loin chops are a match for any grill beautifully marinated and barbequed to give that sticky glossy finish.
If you can stomach any more in the nicest possible sense then sample the signature Delisserie New York baked cheesecake, rich, very promising and extremely attractive. The apple pie is topped with a sugary crust and crammed full with fresh apples served hot and comes with ice cream or fresh cream.
The DrinkThe wine list isn’t going to win any awards of note but there are some interesting choices including an earthy Australian Ironstone Shiraz Grenache from 2002 and a raspberry and blackberry flavoured, full bodied French Domaine Belles Eaux Chardonnay 2003 from the Languedoc region. Also watch out for the beer of the month which is a firm fixture on the drinks list.
The Last WordAn almost faultless performance, the Delisserie brings a slice of the Big Apple to the very heart of Mill Hill with exceedingly good results.
