The ViewLondon Review
Got a craving for Tex-Mex or Spanish cuisine? Cross the Thames over to Greenwich where you’ll find generous portions, inventive cocktails and a warm, welcoming staff at Desperados.
The Venue
The exterior of Desperados is like something you might find in a small Mexican village, something like a local cantina. Inside, decor is kept very simple and uncomplicated with minimal colour, bare wood tables and chairs with red cushions.
The Atmosphere
Staff are very friendly, especially the bar staff – you might even get a complimentary drink or shooter after your meal. There’s a lively vibe along with an endless supply of alluring and original cocktails – the recipe for a long, relaxed and filling lunch or a more energetic evening out.
The Food
Diners are presented with loads of choices. For starters, nachos (£3.95) are enough for two people to share and are made up of crispy corn tortilla chips covered with a blend of melted cheeses, fiery jalapenos, cool sour cream, fresh pico de gallo and salsa. You can add chicken or beef as a topping for just £1 extra. This dish is perfect as a light starter for two or even a small main for one person.
Vegetable enchiladas (£9.95) are bursting with mildly seasoned fresh vegetables and cheese served with a liberal side of Mexican rice and creamy pinto beans. You can also have it with chicken, beef or as a combo but it is equally as satisfying without. Cajun chicken burger (£7.95) is a grilled butterfly chicken breast kicked up with flavoursome Cajun spices, served on a toasted bun with mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato. It is juicy, tender and slightly spicy. Choose between a heaping pile of chips or jacket potato for the side.
The Drink
You won’t go thirsty at Desperados with the huge selection of beverages to choose from. Menus consist of vino tinto (red wines), vino blanco (white wines), two cocktail menus, and another for beer and soft drinks. Red wine sangria is full of seasonal chopped fruit, refreshing and potent at the same time. It’s the perfect way to wash down your spicy meal and can be ordered as a pitcher for around £16. There are two extensive cocktails menus to pick your poison from with quirky named concoctions such as the Mad Mexican, the Cactus Banger, and for the adventurous, the Exterminator all at around £5. Or if you are in the mood for some shooters (£3.95) try the Speedy Gonzales, Adios Amigo, or an Irish Monkey.
The Last Word
An inexpensive way to dine on some hearty comfort food from south of the U.S. border.
