A greasy spoon style caff that serves up giant fry-ups without the usual dollop of grease, that will settle any hang over and will definitely keep you going throughout the day.

The Venue
In the area surrounding Victoria station, there’s nothing much to brag about in the line of cafes and restaurants. Mostly full of chains, Wilton road seems rather bland and unimpressive. DKs looks dull from the outside, but if you’re tempted by the fuss free look of it, then you’ll love what waits inside. Imagine the caff in Eastenders, but add a cleaner look, some nicer wooden furniture and no depressing faces in sight. This is what DK’s is like, your typical local greasy spoon without all the negatives.

It is extremely simple, with small wooden tables, crammed into almost every nook and cranny of the space, and a small bar running round the edge of the cafe with stools for those who want to eat alone. The venue is very bare, but seems clean and tidy, with only a simple ketchup and brown sauce bottle on each table for decoration. There’s lots of light from the windows, and lots of colour beaming from each table exuding from the vibrant breakfasts, such as yolk yellow and tomato red. Simple but effective and good for stirring the taste buds.

The Atmosphere
The friendly staff meet you as you enter, hand you a laminated menu and wait for you to make your decision. Most of the customers are the kind of people that you’d expect to be eating fry-ups – very blokey men. The atmosphere is down to earth and relaxing, and the chatter around the room ranges from humorous banter to interesting gossip. As always, there’s the token person who sits in the corner and reads their paper, off in their own world.

The Food
Come with an appetite and a completely empty stomach – the portions are massive which means they’re great value for money but not great for a snack. There are the ultimate breakfast combinations which are what DKs is famous for. The special breakfast for £9.50 gives you fillet steak, bacon, eggs, sausages, hash-browns, fried bread, beans, mushrooms and tomatoes. There are also variations of this for £5, such as the American where you can get pancakes in the mix too. There are also Eggs Benedict, continental breakfasts, and combinations of the fry-up staples that will make sure all get what they crave, even if it’s just a bacon butty or beans on toast. The huge plates may seem difficult to tackle, but the flavours are top notch.

The Eggs Benedict with bacon has none of the usual fuss or poncyness, just simple buns with perfectly poached eggs that have the signature runny yolk that oozes everywhere. The buns are covered in a thick layer of Hollandaise, which has a delicate creamy flavour but needs more of a spice and sharpness as it soon becomes a bit too rich. The bacon is delicious, without any greasy slime, it has a salty pork flavour that cuts through the richness of the cholesterol medley. Hash browns are also cooked well, crispy on the outside with moist potato on the inside. And the ripe tomatoes are a refreshing counteraction to the fry-up overload. It may be overwhelming for many, and the overall dish is delicious but very heavy, so beware if you prefer something lighter.

The Drink
Caffeine is what most of us need in the morning, so coffees are done well here with generous cup sizes, and of course English Breakfast is a another staple favourite. There are also fresh juices to wash down your breakfast and give you a fruit fix as well.

The Last Word
A place that’s does what it sets out to do, give customers a great fry-up at a good price without any silliness. Just watch your waistline.
