The ViewLondon Review
A greasy spoon on the outskirts of Croydon is hardly the stuff dreams of made of. But for a tasty, cheap as chips, good old fashioned English cafe, they don’t come much better than Double Egg.
The Venue
With chronic parking facilities and a considerable hike to anything that remotely resembles a train station, this cafe isn’t exactly easy to get to. Small mercies are provided in the form of a bus stop slap bang in front of its enticing green and yellow wrapping. It’s barely big enough to accommodate one man and his dog, but the inside is warm and comfortable and for history buffs, the walls are adorned with old photographs of the Croydon and Thornton Heath area.
The Atmosphere
The staff adopt a no-frills but exceedingly hospitable, welcoming approach – as if you’d popped into your nan’s for lunch. Staff fry eggs like machines in the corner and a charming woman greets customers with a glowing smile. She sets the tone for what can only be described as a mutual air of contentment. Above the sizzling sound of bacon and the boiling kettle is the sound of builders ruffling their newspapers and the genial cockney banter between a couple of local footie fans.
The Food
Choose from a plethora of innovative fried combos on offer or mix and match your own. It has to be said that there’s actually nothing greasy about this greasy spoon and the fried eggs are arguably the best in South London. Putting to shame the rubbery plastic served up in many Wetherspoons joints, these eggs are delicately griddled. Submerged under spider web egg white, pierce your fork through the yolky exterior for unbridled runny paradise. The black pudding is scrumptious too.
The Drink
There’s the usual array of fizzy drinks, cartons of Ribena and mugs of tea and coffee. And for those of us who refuse to enter adulthood, why not try one of their frothy Crusha milkshakes?
The Last Word
Mainly a regular for locals but if you’re heading into Croydon or attending a Crystal Palace football match, this lovely little cafe is well worth a pit-stop. It’s cheap and cheerful and those eggs are to die for.
