The ViewLondon Review
The Feng Shang Princess is one of the best kept and most wonderful secrets in London - a Chinese restaurant that is a beautiful boat moored on the Regents Park canal. The VenueThe two-story boat is decorated in authentic Imperial Chinese style with a pagoda-shaped roof and a facade painted in Chinese lacquer red with touches of gold. A bridge takes you from the bank, over the water of the canal, to the restaurant where a scene of tables covered in gold cloths await you. It is obvious that the art of Feng Shui has been taken into account in the decor of this restaurant.
The AtmosphereAlthough popular with Hampstead residents and other Londoners, the atmosphere at the Feng Shang Princess boat is one of peace and quiet - the quiet murmur of voices is all that can be heard from the other customers. This does not mean the Feng Shang is not a good place for a party, on the contrary, but the restaurant caters for discerning clients who want civilised and sophisticated dining.
The FoodThe food at Feng Shang is probably the best and most sophisticated Chinese fare in London. The mixed platter of appetisers, which includes prawn toasts, spare ribs and crispy seaweed is absolutely delicious. Vegetarians are also catered for here, with dishes such as the baked bean curd with aubergine hot pot, and it is first class. All dishes are best accompanied by rice and noodles, of which there is an excellent selection.
The DrinkThe Feng Shang boasts a bigger and better choice of wines than most Oriental restaurants. A special mention goes to the Sancerre, a white wine which is particularly recommended as a partner to the Chinese fare.
The Last WordWhat makes the Feng Shang so special is that it has everything – beautiful decor, a relaxing atmosphere and delicious top quality food, but it is not too expensive by Central London standards.
