Fez has got to be one of the worst that I have ever been to - definitely do not go with groups.
The menu was incorrect and the food dreadful - don't order the baby chicken, it is the same as diced chicken. The hummus tastes like Sainsburys (in fact Sainsburys is better), the spinach pastries are tasteless and the halloumi tastes and looks like melted cheddar cheese.
The waiter was rude, the manager was indifferent, and the service was unbearably slow. We failed to receive 2 of our entrees - when asked about it the waiter shrugged his shoulders and left - without bringing them. The traditional mezze plate stated chicken wings on the menu, but when they failed to materialise, we were told, oh we ran out so we decided to give you something else instead.
The rudeness of the single waiter was unbelieveable. There are much better places with better food and better service and atmosphere.
I feel compelled to express that Fez is by far the single worst restaurant I have ever experienced! The awful decor, and fairly average food aside, the service was terrible. Having waited an age after ordering, a couple of dishes came out cold, one didn't appear at all, and an alternative drinks order was served without an explanation! Our desert order was clearly 'down graded' in size, presumably after our reasonable request for drinks we liked was begrudgingly granted.
We could hear people around us equally eager to leave. The Fez waiter then had the cheek to unashamedly express how he never benefitted from the service charge, essentially trying to coax a further 10 percent out of us for outstandingly bad service. What a debacle!
We went for a Christmas dinner at Fez in a group. The waiter told us that he would offer us an 'eat all you want' style dinner for £17.00 each. The portions for our mains were very small, with two plates between our whole group containing approximately four pieces of meat and a few bits of vegetables and couscous. We also assumed we would get a dessert, but we got a small plate of six pastry parcels.
The service at Fez was very slow and we constantly had to ask for more drinks, as they only had one waiter on for the whole restaurant. After getting more and more we were shocked at the bill. We were charged VAT on top of the £17.00 per person and £45.00 for service!
Although the food was reasonable we were very angry with the service and having to pay £30.00 per head for a meal that left us hungry. I would not recommend Fez for group meals or frankly at all.
I used to always get this Fez mixed up with the other one in Islington, 'cos I've heard good reports about that one too. Anyway, this Fez is a great North African place with the kitschiest decor around. You have to book most nights at the Fez, but the food is excellent so it's worth it.
I visited Fez last Friday night for a drink and food before going to Screen on the Green.
I wasn't that hungry so thought I'd just order a starter - mixed mezze. When I sat down I was greeted and given a basket of what I can only describe as ripped up stale bread rolls and pickled veg with olives (not very fresh). I ordered a beer which was good!
I then ordered the mixed starter. It arrived on a dirty plate looking like the beans were fresh out of the tin (still in the shape of the tin) and with what looked like oven cooked pastry parcels which could have been Birds Eye! Without touching what was put in front of me I asked the waitress for the bill and when she asked me if there was a problem I showed her the dirty plate and told her I was not prepared to eat the food but would pay the bill. In fairness she was very polite and didn't make me pay my bill or for the beer, I think she probably just wanted me to leave. I would not recommend Fez to anyone. It's not that hard to serve half decent food and put at least a little thought into presentation and the produce you are serving to a paying customer. At least clean the plates!
Fez is a great place if you want a cheap meal. Have had a few birthday parties here where we have a good night with around 10 to 20 people. Good food.
