We have been to Fish & Grill many times and generally enjoyed the food. The Fruit De Mere and Smoked Fish with Horseraddish are stand outs from a decent Brasserie selection on the menu. However recently the service has gone downhill, which is a shame. With the strong local competition for diners, consistency is key to success in South Croydon. After their early success Fish & Grill are resting on their laurels.
Simple mistakes like serving bottled water warm with no ice, forgetting dishes and aggressive off hand staff, have marred our last 2 visits (both in September '11) and have spoilt what was a local jewel. They seem to have forgotten that when people are spending £50-£100 per head they should be treated with respect or they will not return. There are plenty of very decent eateries within 100yds. Go to Fish & Grill only if Alberts Table, Apatura, Aqua or Bagatti's are full and expect good food (if they can remember your order) but poor service.
A shame and we will not be back.
I went to this restaurant for a friends bday a few weeks ago.
It is not somewhere that was around the corner so didn't really know what to expect as hadn't seen or heard of before.
What a hidden treasure. Food was amazing. Malcolm John himself was there checking that everyone was happy with the service.
My mouth watered seeing the seafood laid out on ice upon entering the restaurant. Had lobster for my main which was amazing.
Would definitely come back or try the other sister restaurants. Well done Malcolm.
Food is good - but no better than the fantastic Albert's Table opposite. Service is appalling - the Maitre d' is very off hand and the waiters are clearly very inexperienced.
Our food was delivered in shifts - in fact we had to ask for the side orders twice and were nearly finished by the time we received the last dish.
Waiters also started to clear the table before we had finished eating. the whole experience was topped off with cold coffee and a 12.5% service charge automatically added (perhaps it is the only way they can get tips!).
There are many far better restaurants - even in Croydon!
Fish and Grill is what suburban South London has been waiting for!!
I went for a meal on thurs 22 jan, the restaurant was about 1/3 full which in retrospect is a shame, although one of the head waitresses informed me the restaurant was full at the weekends. We had a good period of conversation between Starter and Main so at busier times maybe more?
The meal in itself was gorgeous- i had Scallops (divine, but only 2?) Calfs liver with Bacon and mash Potato- so nice to have Liver cooked properly- and the Bread and Butter pudding, it was all so nice washed down with a Fruity red! My Partner had the Fillet steak cooked Rare which was also lovely and done to perfection.
The restaurant was inviting and welcoming and had a relaxed atmosphere.
This restaurant is a jewel in Croydons crown and worth making an effort to get to, as we did from Wandsworth.
I recommend Fish and Grill highly, we will be coming back.
I am so glad that Fish & Grill has come to Croydon, I think it's going to be my new favourite place. I had beef steak and it was cooked to perfection. Delicious.
