If you want seafood in a buzzy, modern setting in Islington, Fish Shop on St John is the perfect venue.

The Venue
The smart outside gives way to airy rooms which are kitted out in chrome, glass and black chic. The split level eating has twosomes of tables, although seats are tightly packed. It’s a good place for impressive first or regular dates.

The Atmosphere
Quick competent service, the food is beautifully prepared and presented and you’ll get expert wine guidance. It feels a bit like a Chelsea restaurant, so don’t be surprised by the similar prices. However, there is a very good value prix fixe menu at lunchtime and early evening, so keep an eye out.

The Food
Starters of fish chowder and real taramasalata give way to large or small seafood platters, fish of the day and lots of choices from cod to sole. Meat eaters can get beef or lamb, although there’s usually only one option. Sides include proper chips and mushy peas and nice crisp salads. Fish is fresh from Billingsgate and they do nice children’s food as well. Desserts are home-made, including the very good ice cream and a nice Fish Shop crumble.

The Drink
Good Sauvignon and Chablis Grand Cru, which makes it a great place for wines in Islington, and all sorts of other nice whites to accompany the dishes. The list is understandably short on red wines but has a great Beaune for those cold winter nights. Dessert wines like Rieussec are offered.

The Last Word
Get your upmarket fish fix at the Fish Shop on St John Street, a great, classy venue.
