The ViewLondon Review
After a very successful debut on Middlesex Street, Flying Burrito has opened its second store nearby. And it’s no surprise that this has been equally well received.
The Venue
The Flying Burrito’s second store is very similar to its first. For a start, it’s small. Very small. Located in an old bagel shop, it’s mainly centred on the takeaways, although bench-style seating and a few wooden tables allow for those diners without offices nearby to enjoy a burrito here. The main centrepiece to the action is the counter with a wide array of burrito fillings sitting ready for you to customise your own lunch. Big signs clearly label the choices behind the serving counter, otherwise there’s little in the way of decorative flourish – not that you’d notice anyway behind the crowds.
The Atmosphere
Flying Burrito is hectic to say the least. At peak times, between 12pm and 2pm, the queue snakes its way out of the door and onto the street. However, you shouldn’t let it put you off as the staff are very good at dealing with large volumes of orders quickly and efficiently and the queue soon dissolves.
The Food
As with many burrito bars, Flying Burrito has a tiny menu – but that’s all it needs. The choice is a burrito, a taco or a salad with your choice of filling. That’s it. And the prices are competitive at £5.70 (£4.95 for a small). The choice of meat is beef, chicken, pork and a veggie option with a big choice of extras – some free, some at a small additional cost. Highly recommended is the beef barbacoa – beef marinated overnight in chillis, red wine and orange juice before being slow cooked with tomatoes, oregano, cumin and bay leaves. The result is tender pieces of beef packed full of flavour with the spices mixing well with a slight sweetness for a nice, well-rounded flavour. Mix it up with black beans, chilli salsa, sour cream, salad and cheese and you end up with a huge burrito the size of your face, so packed full you run the risk of dropping half of it down your suit. But who cares when it tastes so good?
The Drink
As with many lunchtime spots, the drink offering is secondary to the food with a choice of bottled soft drinks coming in at under £2 or a selection of juices that you can find in most cafes. They do, however, also include a choice of Fairtrade coffee, teas and hot drinks that are worth checking out when the weather turns cooler.
The Last Word
Flying Burrito’s second outing is sure to make the office workers local to Liverpool Street happy now they don’t have to trek to Middlesex Street for their lunch. The queues speak for themselves.
