Was taken to 409 for a Valentines treat last night. We'd been before and liked the ambience and food so as it was a Sunday night and fairly local, my girlfriend thought we'd give it another go. Unfortunately It fell short on many levels. The waitress kept forgetting us and failed to serve bread, some of the elements of my main meal were cold (not just luke warm... but cold!) and in general the whole deal was pretentiously over-priced. Its a shame because its a great space well lit etc but to charge the sort of prices they're charging, both the food and service ought to be of a much higher standard. Maybe a packed valentines evening isn't the best night to gauge fairly but if you're going to stick a Valentines tax on an otherwise pretty limited and bland menu you really should be prepared to pull out all the stops.
We won't be gong back for a while I'm afraid.
Went here last night with my partners parents. Although I've lived in the area for almost 3 years I never new this gem existed. Service was a little rushed at first- they tried to foist the bread and starters on us before we'd had a chance to sip our wine and catch up. However, despite the initial rush the rest of the meal was well timed.
The food was beautiful- particularly the starters and deserts. The fois gras was beautiful and the confit of duck with sprouts was delightful. I did however feel that the mains all left a little to be desired; sounded good on the menu but didn't quite meet my expectations. The chocolate brownie was amazing though!
Other comments have said the place is over priced- its not, this is what you pay for quality produce cooked well in a fancy restaurant in London. All in all it was a wonderful night and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants quality food and a nice relaxing/intimate evening.
I think the easiest way to summarise Four 0 Nine is that it is a restaurant that serves fantastic food but can only do so in a painfully slow and, at times, amateurish way. I have been to Four 0 Nine on several occasions and have always enjoyed the food although, beware, the menu is not particularly extensive so you may not find something to your liking if you are particularly picky.
The service is average at best, but quite honestly, given the prices are certainly top tier it really shouldn't be. Expect long waits for cocktails, food to be delivered and the bill to be presented (and be sure to check your bill for all too frequent errors).
In summary, it is great to have a fine restaurant such as Four 0 Nine in Clapham. If Four 0 Nine could simply provide the sort of service that the prices warrant this would be a 5 star restaurant. In my experience sadly, it doesn't.
after reading people's feedback on here, we went for a treat. little did we know - teh place is totally overpriced, and a rip-off on valentines day. all in all too much attitude as well. what a shame - could have been a nice evening, somewhere else.
My boyfriend and I went to Four O Nine last night for a romantic meal to celebrate our anniversary. What a treat! I had no idea this place existed, despite only living round the corner! It was lovely to discover such a hidden gem in our neighbourhood. Food and wine were both great; a little pricier than we would usually be able to afford but that just made it all the more special. It had a good atmosphere for mid-week too- busy and buzzing but not crowded and we never felt neglected by the staff. I highly recommend it for a romantic, special meal out in clapham..
Four O Nine has a nice atmosphere and it looks lovely inside. Both my husband and I were very impressed with the food. The duck prosciutto and foie gras were gorgeous and the Irish beef was excellent.
This was the best meal I have had for a very long time. I am going back to Four O Nine this Saturday and I cannot wait.
We decided to try Four O Nine last night and it was a great adventure finding it, with a secret front door which felt like a New York speak-easy. Inside it was very welcoming and quite glamorous with a back-lit bar. The cocktails were delicious and the food was also good with generous portions. We particularly liked our starters.
The value was great with the total bill for two coming in at £110 including a bottle of wine. My only criticism would be one of ambience. There were two large groups in the restaurant and it was very noisy. Four O Nine could be very romantic but with this clientele it was better suited for a nice trendy meal before going out dancing than a quiet romantic dinner. I would definitely go back but possibly next time on a weekday night to compare.
Finally! A restaurant in Clapham that I can wholeheartedly recommend. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. You're happy to chill out at the Four O Nine bar with a cocktail and take your time with your meal.
The service is professional and unobtrusive. The menu is limited but means that each dish is perfectly put together. To die for foie gras and chateaubriand guarantee that I'll be back again at Four O Nine soon!
From a friendly greeting, to excellent service, a stylish bar and amazing food, the whole Four o Nine experience was one I would throughly recommend to someone looking for a West End style dining experience, close to home. All the dishes were amazing and the food was accompanied by a very well priced Chilean Merlot which was excellent as well.
The meal was also extremely well priced as well with 3 courses for £33.00. I Would recommend you go to Four o Nine before everyone else finds out about it.
I tried Fouronine for the first time last weekend. The ambience was spot on and the food delicious. Put together with the amazing cocktails on offer and overall we had one of the best nights we have ever had in Clapham at Fouronine.
The ambience at Fouronine was good and there was enough space between tables to have a private meal. The service was attentive but not intrusive and the food really was good with a fantastic wine list to match.
I came here for an intimate dinner for two but would also happily bring a bigger group of girl friends to Fouronine to sample some some cocktails before dinner too.
Fouronine is a breath of fresh air in Clapham. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is great and they have got table service if you just want to go for drinks, and to top it off they have a late licence. What more could you ask for from Fouronine.
The food at Fouronine was delicious. I started with a foie gras and chicken liver parfait with a toasted brioche that simply melted in the mouth. It was so good, I'd have liked some more brioche to go with it. Next was a deliciously tender Chateau Briand, it was cooked to perfection - I asked for medium rare and it definitely was, which sadly is not always the case in other restuarants.
By now seriously full, I managed to find room for a creme brulee. I can't wait to go again as I want to try all the other things I missed out on! Fouronine is a welcome addition to Clapham.
