Great to have this sort of restaurant up in Islington, i.e. away from the crush of the West End. When we arrived our table wasn't ready but there is a little bar at the front where they serve delicious bubbly - and then we were shown to our table. Top quality decor and food presentation. (The food was delicious too!) It is pretty expensive, and the menu is not huge, but the place is definitely worth a trip for a special occasion.
Yesterday (12/11/10) my husband and I went to Fredericks. It was Friday, but it was early, 6pm, so fairly quiet. You could tell it was quiet, as there were waiting staff standing around. Unfortunately, standing around looking bored does not mean being attentive to customers.
Our menus came. However, it was almost 10 minutes before a waiter came to take our order. We ordered our meal and wine. I'd finished my water and my husband had almost finished his. The waitress came to change the cutlery. Not a single word was said to us, no hello, nothing. Nor did she notice that we needed more water. Wine arrived halfway through our starter. We asked the waiter for water. He disappeared. Starters finished and we waited patiently for our water... Eventually we had to ask another waiter for it.
I'm quite happy to pour my own wine, but if Fredericks insists on keeping the bottle with the waiting staff, I think it is their responsibility to ensure that our glasses are filled. Yes, you guessed it, we finished our wine. I pointed out to my husband that there were four members of staff standing near the serving area and not noticing our empty wine glasses. I bet him that if I went to the loo, I'd come back and still find our wine glasses empty. I won the bet, so we had to ask the waitress for our wine.
The mains arrived at c.6.50pm, steak and chips. Firstly, Fredericks may think it looks attractive to have a steak on a plate and then the bearnaise sauce in a little pot on the plate and chips on a dish also placed on the plate, but all this 'fancy stuff' does is tell the diner that the restaurant is trying to make the plate look full when the steak is small and there are hardly any chips on the plate. Anyway I asked the waitress for mustard and Worcestershire sauce and then waited and waited and waited for it... Meanwhile my meal was getting colder and colder and seven minutes later she came back with the sauces. Regardless of how many dishes they crammed on the plate, the
The service here was poor the food was nothing special and seriously overpriced,
there are plenty of excellent restaurants in Islington, go to one of them instead!
We went to Fredericks's to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
The party was simply perfect: the food was excellent, the presentation of the food and quality of the service were top class and the settingwas ideal (especially that the weather was glorious and we were sat in the patio).
All the guests were really impressed and a few of them were actuallythinking of going back to Fredericks PA.
We will definitely be back!!!
I went to Fredericks for a birthday lunch and ordered the three course lunch menu plus wine. The food was appalling. The Duck egg salad was unappetising and mean, comprising one hardboiled egg with runny insides, on a bed of cress, with one gherkin sliced into a star, with a dollop of mayonnaise.
My seafood crepe was small, burnt, with bits of indistinguishable fish and tiny shrimps and no sauce. The Shepherds pie was as good as you get in a pub and the plum crumble was no better than off the shelf in a supermarket.
I'm not going back to Fredericks, ever, despite the attractive setting.
Fredericks is a great setting, it is particularly pleasant to sit outside on warm evening. Fredericks is seriously overpriced for competent but by no means outstanding cooking.
Fredericks is a gem. The staff are really friendly, the food is fab, and you're not rushed, which is great if you fancy a night of chatting to your friends over wonderful food. The price at Fredericks is also not as bad as I feared. I wish I'd discovered this place years ago.
We went to Fredericks for a birthday celebration and had an excellent time. The menu is very creative and the wine list offers an excellent selection. All our food was cooked to perfection and the service was one of the best I have ever experienced. Our waiter was extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgable. All this combined with the beautiful conservatory and seating area outside makes it Fredericks my favourite place in Islington.
We had a very enjoyable evening at Fredericks. We had a party of 8 people and all agreed that the food was delicious and the service was good. The bill was very reasonable. Worked out to be £65.00 per head for a 3 course meal and wine. A revisit to Fredericks is on the cards!
Don't bother. Fredericks has rubbish service and poor food. We booked a table for 6 at 5.45pm for the pre theatre menu and turned up at 5.35pm, to be told that the restaurant was not yet open.
So fine, we waited at the Fredericks bar and ordered drinks. At 6pm after other dinners had been seated we asked about our table and still had to wait until 10 past. Not acceptable when they knew we had to leave by 7.15pm.
The table was missing items, service was slow. One of the three main courses on the set menu was omlette (and very average at that)! Don't bother with Fredericks, plenty of other places to go.
My boss has just been to Fredericks for lunch with a business associate. For the two of them it cost a whopping £109.00 for two courses, coffee and a bottle of wine!
An uninspiring bottle of Reisling came in at £29.00 and a portion of buttered carrots cost £3.00. He said the food at Fredericks was good but seriously overpriced for what it was!
I arrived at Fredericks with my party of 12 colleagues for a celebratory business dinner on a wet and miserable evening and was delighted with my choice.
The venue was smart but yet relaxed, the service was attentive and friendly and the food was superb. I can only recommend that you give Fredericks a go!!
We visited Fredericks as a family party of 4 on Saturday evening 16th October 2004. The welcome was very warm, the food and drink first class, the service very efficient but wholly relaxed and the comfort and ambiance of the restaurant wonderful.
Aspiring restaurateurs could do no better than to spend time at Fredericks and observe, learn and follow its formula. We certainly will be back whenever we are in London.
