Went to the Gastro this week for some breakfast. It was busy but not overly so. The service was dreadful and the staff were unfriendly. We enquired to the manager if our food was on its way as we had finished our coffees almost 20 minutes and the food had yet to come. She replied if we wanted to leave the restaurant then we could. Her manner was appalling and she was throwing lots of shapes!. The food was slapped down on our table soon after and it was pretty average for a fry. Definitely won't be going back. The lady at the table next to us informed us that as far as she can see the female manager is rude to customers most weekends especially if they are anyway busy. Lots of other nice cafes/restaurants in the area therefore I wouldn't recommend putting up with the attitude from these. Life’s too short!
What a joke. This place has as much Gallic charm as Thierry Henry’s hand ball.
This small restaurant looks the same on the inside as it does on the outside, run down and shabby. If you are really lucky you may get one of the tables in the corridor to the loo’s - romantically set under a dirty plastic roof.
Come on Clapham wake up, the only thing typically French about Gastro is the appalling rude staff. Avoid.
I took my partner as a treat to this restaurant for his birthday tonight. It was a calamity.
When I reserved a table that morning, I explained that this was a birthday and the lady on the phone assured me they would do something nice for him : "we sing and do a little presentation at the end of the meal" Great!
As it happened, my partner is allergic to dairy products. We explained this but still a boudin noire arrived with creamed mashed potatoes and a creamy sauce. We complained, the waitress took it away then came back with the mash gone but the sauce still there. The fries with my steak (mediocre) were a soggy mess so I just left them.
The indifferent wine (a 2007 Bourgogne) was, at nearly £30 a disgraceful mark up.
We asked for dessert but there was not ONE non-dairy option. This restaurant couldn't even rise to a sorbet or fruit salad! What kind of a place is this?
As for the birthday surprise? The surprise was it never happened.
So we didn't pay the service charge for this lousy, amateur dive. I hope you, dear reader, have better luck.
Happy birthday!
Great atmosphere, I feel like I can escape London in this place. the food is very good and the price is modest. Service is very friendly and the decor is one of a kind! Have had a great breakfast here and many a good coffee.
I love Gastro, I go there every Sunday morning for a nice Gastro special breakfast. Apart from the good, simple food the second thing I like the most here is the atmosphere and attitude of the staff. Gastro may seem rude at first but it is so Parisienne. As soon as I walk through the door I feel as though I am back in Paris again. Bravo Gastro et merci!
Who needs authentic French cuisine and a trip to the continent when the staff at Gastro have the one thing we travel for - a snotty attitude and reluctance to speak in English.
Good one Gastro for helping along European relations!
Gastro is the best restaurant in the whole of London.
Ambience.
Food.
Wine.
They only take cash, but who cares.
Only recommend this to your Favourite friends as it's perfect as it is.
