The ViewLondon Review
Gelato Mio’s motto is be nice, be natural and be good! The newest branch in St. John’s Wood is staying true to their beliefs with fresh, all natural ingredients and exciting changing flavours, always served with a great, big, smile.
The Venue
Though the space is on the smaller side, it is well decorated, clean and comfortable. Bare walls are brightened up with the use of orange and white as accent colours in the decor. Tables are plain black wood with simple chairs. If you need to relax a little while enjoying your delicious gelato or sorbetto, then head to the back lounge area and have a seat on one of the comfy, brown suede, L-shaped sofas.
The Atmosphere
There is a lively, friendly vibe at Gelato Mio similar to what you might find at a gelato shop in Italy. Staff are personable and very passionate about their products. Feel free to sample a few flavours before making your selection and ask as many questions as you want – they don’t mind.
The Food
There are around 16 delectable flavours (including gelato and sorbetto) in the display case daily to choose from by the scoop. Prices are £2.90 for a small, £3.80 for a medium and £4.70 for a large. Gelato incorporates organic British milk in with other ingredients and sorbetto is the dairy free option of fresh fruit, mineral water and sugar. If you still crave something that you don’t see, put in your request and the gelato maestro will try to make up your flavour creation. How cool is that?
Fragola sorbetto is made with fresh strawberries, mineral water and sugar. This non-dairy delight is bursting with sweetness from freshly picked strawberries and is light and refreshing. If you love pistachios, try the pistachio gelato made with Sicilian pistachios, which is creamy and rich. Bacio gelato is made to resemble the famous Perugina Italian chocolate, Baci, which combines hazelnuts and chocolate. It is sweet, nutty and truly memorable. Peanut Butter gelato is an unexpected flavour to find in a gelato shop. Made with real peanut butter blended in, this flavour is sweet and salty at the same time. Not a conventional flavour but definitely a crowd pleaser.
Cioccolato gelato, made with rich dark Belgian chocolate, is the best choice for chocolate lovers. It is smooth, rich and utterly delicious. Mango sorbetto, on the other hand, is light and refreshing, and you can taste the essence of fresh mangoes. Cocco gelato, heaven on earth for coconut fans, features finely ground coconut pulp blended in to the creamy, dreamy mixture. Stracciatella gelato is the Gelato Mio staff’s favourite flavour. This one uses milk ice cream and dark chocolate chips for a crunchy and satisfying indulgence. Mint leaf gelato is like nothing you’ve ever tasted before, made with an infusion of fresh mint leaves combined with dark chocolate chips. The slightly bitter dark chocolate is the perfect match for the pungent mint flavour. Mint chocolate ice cream lovers will be converted.
Besides the vast array of gelatos and sorbettos, you can also have freshly made sandwiches, cakes, and Italian cookies. In winter months there are unique flavours such as limoncello, Prosecco, and Bordello, which do contain some alcohol so keep the kiddies away from these ones.
The Drink
If you find yourself thirsty, there are coffees, soft drinks, juices and mineral waters to choose from.
The Last Word
Since gelato contains 50 - 60% less fat than regular ice cream, why not choose this authentic Italian treat next time you get the craving for something cold and sweet?
