The ViewLondon Review
A traditional London pub with bags of character and a great menu, the George and Dragon is well worth a visit if you’re in the area.
The Venue
The George and Dragon is quite a non-descript type of place. It stands forlornly on the corner of Cleveland Street and Greenwell Street, in Fitzrovia. It’s off the beaten track for the shopping crowd, and it could be easily missed unless you know to seek it out. It’s a typical London boozer, with one room offering a small amount of dining space.
Although the George and Dragon could be grouped along with many other London pubs of the same style and stature, one thing makes this little gem rise above the rest is the landlord propped up against the end of the bar, who greets the punters as they come in for a tipple. It’s a thing that’s becoming hard to find in pubs nowadays and is always a pleasure to see.
The Atmosphere
This little pub has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Many locals regularly pop in, but even for a newbie to the pub, the warm interior is a welcoming sight. Antique clocks and old-style cigarette machines make you feel like you’re stepping back in time and this pub feels like you could easily while away the hours watching the world go by. It’s not in an area that’s going to attract busy crowds, so you can enjoy reading the paper, or a quiet chat.
The Food
Surprisingly for its diminutive size, the George and Dragon has an extensive and varied menu for its punters. There’s a board with daily specials, which consist of approximately eight to ten tantalisingly scrumptious offerings, such as pork belly with mash and cabbage, garlic and lemon salmon fillet, or lamb shank in red wine (all priced at £7.50). The normal menu offers typical pub grub - homemade burgers, lasagne, and fish and chips, all reasonably priced between £6.50-£7.50. The portions are very generous, the food homemade and it is definitely above the average pub grub standard.
The Drink
This is a Greene King pub, so expect to see ales such as IPA and Abbot Ale on draft, as well as St Edmunds. A decent wine list is also available, with whites such as an Australian chardonnay setting you back around £4.50 for the glass, and £12.50 for the bottle. If you fancy red, a bottle of French cabernet sauvignon is slightly dearer at £4.90 for the glass and £14.50 per bottle. Champagne, cava, a wide selection of spirits and soft drinks are also available.
The Last Word
The George and Dragon may be slightly off the beaten track, but this traditional boozer offers good food and drink, served with a smile. Recommended.
