This restaurant promotes grain fed beef as if its a good thing - it's really not! Cows have evolved to live on a diet of grass. Cows fed on grains have to be treated with chemicals in order to reduce the incidence of e-coli. And whilst I am unsure of the origins of Goodman's Grain fed beef, 99% of the Grain Fed Beef comes from factory farms where the cattle never see any grass and live in appalling conditions. Grain fed beef is a consequence of mass production applied to farming, it is not a 'high quality' issue as the Goodman's staff might have you believe. I also found it rather amusing that the 'grass fed' beef was described by their staff as having an 'earthy' flavour - by earthy I wonder if they mean - 'like proper beef!' Good prices anf friendly service but avoid the grain fed beef!
Yes, Goodman is the place if you like steaks, there is no doubt about that.
Where there is a serious doubt is whether the receptionists are up to their job. Twice within the last month have I had lunch there, twice were the welcome and leaving greetings non existent. These girls live joined with their telephone to their ears, completely oblivious to people coming and going.
I love this place. If you are a carnivore this is the place to visit. My cut of choice is the Porterhouse and you will be hard pushed to find a better example anywhere in London. Quality meat, cooked to perfection, good range of size options and no Michelin pomp and ceremony. The atmosphere is perfect for enjoying the delicious food. If I had to criticize; and I am being really picky. It is the common London problem of hovering waiting staff, until that is you have actually ordered. Then trying to get a drink refill or the cheque, requires demented arm waving to attract attention. IF it were not such a schlep from my office I would eat there weekly.
I very rarely rave about a restaurant in London, I’ve lived here for 8 years and eaten in a lot of different place from your eat all you can to £100+ per head.
This is without question my favourite place in London. The food is superb, the service excellent, atmosphere easy going and not full of pretentious fools or city boys. If you like good food/ steak you will LOVE this place. Expect to pay around £50 per head, but it’s worth every penny.
My guest and I both have extensive experience of hospitality and both agreed this was how restaurants should be, simple! I almost didn’t write this review for fear of it getting over crowded, a let’s keep this one a secret moment! But that’s just not cricket is it!
Oh and as to the review prior to this, I’m not sure what they mean by “seated so pretentiously by the toilet”? If you’re not happy with a table, anywhere, then ask to move or don’t eat there!
If I was out for a romantic dinner with my wife I would have booked too! Also, perhaps they were fully booked and expected you to still be there past 7.15, you did say you arrived in the evening? Did you break a world speed eating record!
I would suggest that 90% of places in London charge service as standard now so this is not surprising and certainly not pretentious.
We were invited in by a busboy who said 'Come in and have a drink'... seemed so friendly that we did.
We had wine at the bar early hours (around 6pm) and the bar tender was friendly and cheerful... that is where things changed slighty.
We had no reservations, and asked if there were any tables (on a Wednesday night)... the woman came over with a sheet, and said they were totally booked... my mistake to have stayed.
She 'squeezed us in' by the handicapped toilet. Ceasar salad was 8/10, beef was tasty, but the lamp chops were very fatty.
Our busboy was very friendly and showed us the raw steaks before we ordered. Wine was great... the problem was, when we left at 7:15, the restaurant was still mostly empty... so WHY were we seated so pretentiously by the toilet?
We spent one hundred and twenty pounds, and left no further tip... (just the standard 12.5 percent included)... STOP the pretention please... seat people who spend the money at a nice table...
I was with my wife on a romantic date, and the toilet was not a 'plus'. Sorry...
Goodman is a new steak joint in town. Decked out with clubby New York style theme, although the pictures are 50's London. Very cool style and more importantly spacious, so you dont have to listen to everyones conversation about the Credit Crunch or other mindless talk. The menu is nice and easy to digest. Starters come in at £7.50 for goodies like Salmon Carpaccio or Beef Tartar or £5.50 for the Artichoke Soup. Then the important part are the Steaks which come in at a flat rate £25 for all cuts. Except the 800g Rib on the Bone British grass fed and aged on site which is £35 , but good for two to share. The other cuts being from Australia or US, all being around the 350g mark. So at least i didnt have the price make my mind up for me. There is also Haddock and Chips and Burger or the Rack of Lamb, which the looked very good for the £14 tag.I went for the Beef Carpaccio with the basil cress and parmesan. Perfect as a starter and very tasty bits of fillet indeed, mopping up the meaty oil with my bread is a true pleasure. For main course I was advised to angle for the Ribeye from the US . I wanted it rare but my particulaly bearded waiter advised on a Medium Rare cook to enable all those juices to swell up inside during the cooking. I choose Pepper sauce and some Creamy spinach with gruyere cheese. The steak was bloody brilliant, excuse the pun. Really .... for £25 it was special, especially as 3 months ago i went to Maze Grill and paid around £60 for the same deal and was half in flavour and finish. The Spinach delicious, i needed two in the end . Cheese for dessert to go with my Chateau Ahon red. Five different cheeses , some English and the others french. Perfecty finish to a top meal. Bill came in at £65 with service which i must say was efficent , informative and not at all invading. Nice and laid back. How any steak house should be!!!!So i will be back and i will bring the lady . A steakhouse you can take the woman to..... Nice!!
We went for an early evening dinner on Thursday night (the second night after they officially opened to the public) and absolutely LOVED it. The atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed, the decor was neutral and stylish and best of all the restaurant was very spacious (the tables are well placed and spaced so you don't feel like they've tried to cram as many of them is as possible). We had a very lovely Scottish waiter who was friendly and informative. He bought over a huge platter of beef cuts to explain what our choices were. I didn't order a starter but my boyfriend did - an artichoke soup which was simply the best soup I've tasted in a long while - thick, smooth and smoky and not over salted. We both opted for the American rib eye with 3 side dishes (you can probably get away with two sides to share between 2). The steak was amazing - cooked exactly how we wanted which is a rare achievement - melt in the mouth loveliness. I'm not really a huge steak fan (probably chose the wrong restaurant then!) but I found myself eating the whole thing - fat and all (I'm a fussy eater and usaully end up cutting off any visible fat). The steaks were big so we couldn't stomach dessert but these looked like a good selection of classic favourites which I'm sure would be equally as delicious as the main. With wine, water and coffees (plus complimentary bread and olives) the bill came to about £90 but, unexpectedly, it was after a special 25% opening week discount so expect to pay around £120-£140 for a meal for 2. Perhaps a little on the pricey side but definitely worth the expense. Overall, a great experience and amazing food with attentive staff in a relaxed setting. We shall be back!
