The ViewLondon Review
If you’re looking for good food, culture and hospitality in true Turkish style then Grand Bazaar is a fine choice.
The Venue
Situated on St James Street, Grand Bazaar is close to Bond Street station - a great escape into the mystics of the east side, just away from the crazy shoppers on Oxford Street. Eat alfresco or dine indoors, both will be an enjoyable treat. Inside, dining is on the ground floor with a bar in the basement. Be prepared to be dazzled by the assortment of ornaments that crowd this venue: a sea of lanterns and globes hang from the ceiling, miniature paintings, old photographs, mirrors, shawls, and brickwork off set the deep red walls, emanating Turkish culture.
The Atmosphere
The eclectic style of the interior is what creates the unique, warm, informal atmosphere of this restaurant. In the evening, this place hums with Turkish tunes, bursting at the seams with people - so tread carefully between the tightly packed tables and chairs. The place turns abuzz with locals, shoppers and good food seekers. It’s a small, intimate restaurant and the hospitable staff and customers are what keep the lively vibe of it going.
The Food
The food here is really scrumptious. There is a wide variety of starters to choose from - try the kofta, which is a combination of nuts and lamb, muscles, calamari and hummus, there is also a long list of hot and cold starters accompanied by bread. There’s an assortment of lamb and chicken dishes for mains but the Iskander is, by far, the most famous and popular dish, presented on a large platter and is grilled lamb on small triangles of pitta with tomato sauce served with uncultured yoghurt - each bite is bliss. There is also a long list of Turkish pizzas on the menu without a tomato sauce base. A main course is easy on the pocket and costs between £8.50 and £12 and, of course, there is no calling for the bill without trying some traditional baklava or the Grand Bazaar Delight - a dessert made with dried apricots, fresh cream and almonds.
The Drink
Be sure to have a glass of wine with your meal with prices averaging at £3.25 a glass, or go downstairs to the bar for a range of cocktails, shots or perhaps some Champagne. You can also enjoy a warm Turkish coffee or fruit tea after your meal.
The Last Word
The secret is out, this is the real Turkish Delight!
