DON'T GO THERE. THEY DON'T APPRECIATE CUSTOMERS AT ALL! HORRIBLE PLACE!! BAD SERVICE. ONE OF THE WORST SERVICE WE HAVE EVER RECEIVED IN THE WORLD!! They did not let us know what time they were closing. Then they let us in and we ordered our food. Firstly the waiter seemed annoyed that I did not want to drink any beverage there. But my friend ordered a bottle of red wine anyway. Food arrived. They served curry from bowls and took away the bowls with some curry still left in them. We were enjoying the meal. The food was not that bad. Then a waiter came around saying it was last order perhaps a third into our meal. Then a waiter came up to say, 'we are closing'. But we were still eating and food was still left to be consumed and wine was still left in the bottle. They constantly disturbed us taking our plates one by one as we finished and we were under surveillance of four waiters who are just sitting around us waiting for us to finish. My friend said to the waiter, 'the food was good but I don't like to be rushed to eat. What you probably should have done was tell us when you are closing.' And the waiter just sad, 'yeah you are right.' But still they rushed until the very end. They made us pay with our food in our mouths. Horrible experience.
Absolutely atrocious. Below average food - the chicken tasted as if it had been cooked the day before - impolite staff, and very expensive. I'll never go back again and wouldn't recommend anyone else waste their money there.
I have eaten here recently and agree that it is a very ordinary and unwelcoming place. Frankly, the food was OK (6/10 and I have eaten at one worse in recent months in Croydon) but the decor and general ambiance was tired (2/10). The waiting service was indifferent rather than overtly rude. I agree it is obviously aimed at passing tourist trade, but hope that the poor reviews make them aware of this. I would go back again if desperate to see if there had been any improvement! Anonymous "local worker"
Not even worth rating this place! Poorest customer service abilities. The restaurant manager was rude, lacked any bit of common sense and was utterly foolish. No amount of education will teach him business skills. The look of the place is worth mentioning: only for bad reasons. The restaurant is narrow and the carpet smells unpleasant as well, I can only imagine how the kitchen and toilet must look like!
If you are vegetarian, forget about ordering any of the dishes as main course because the "restaurant's policy" doesn't allow you to purchase veggie only dishes: even if it meant that you order 3 naans+1 vegetable curry + 1 Baingain bharta + 1 bhindi masala!
In all, if you are a hungry tourist and around the area, just bite your hunger and don't step in to this place!
Having recently relocated to Embankment, I have made Grand Indian Restaurant my regular. The restaurant ticks all the boxes for a good meal, especially now that they know I am a regular... a brandy or two on the house.
The staffs are very friendly, approachable and willing to assist to most needs. The one thing I do like about the restaurant is that it is clean and this can be seen in the lavatories, which is rare as you would not go anywhere else but your home.
I have pretty much been through the whole menu and with the exception of a few items I haven’t tried the dishes are full of flavour and exquisite. I recommend the king prawn shashlik which I usually always start off with, which comes sizzling on a hot plate. If I’m hungry, the grand special biryani (which comprises of chicken tikka, mutton tikka and shrimps in the biryani) with the lovely sag paneer as a side always hits the spot. But otherwise the dishes from the chef’s recommended are all a must.
One place I have recommended to my friends and colleagues without any regrets.
I completely agree with the other reviews. The food was poor but the main problem was the rudness of the staff. They were grumpy and not helpful. They made you feel completely unwelcome.
They served the main course before we had finished the starter and started to clear away before we had finished the main course. They dropped food on the table when serving the dishes and grunted when we said we didn't want desert/coffees etc. They are also rather inflexible - insisting that you ordered a main course rather than 2 side dishes which made no sense as 2 side dishes worked out to cost more!
I will never go to the resturant again and have been telling all my friends how bad it is. So if you ever find youself in Villers Street - avoid the Grand Indian 2 at all cost !!!
Overpriced, very rude staff, filthy toilets. Curry was sub-standard. I went in here for its convenient location (just like most people do, I imagine). Very disappointing!
This place is terrible! Over priced, tiny portions and substandard taste. Service is poor, decor old and tatty. Avoid, keep on walking. Obviously aimed at one time only passing trade. Well no one in their right mind would return. Popadoms, dips, naan on are unexpectedly pricey. Be careful. And despite being treated with disdain, a service charge is added to bill at end. Don't go.
This is the most horrible place u can ever go to have any thing to eat. staff is horrible and rude. They started talking in their native language as soon as we entered the restaurant with our baby. They rudely told that baby's pram is only allowed if we fold it, to which we gladly obliged. Then they wanted us to order what they so they can make big earning. They said "rule of management" is that everybody should order one main dish. This all happened as we were settling down and just started to look at the menu. We felt that staff was trying in the rudest possible way to force us to eat what they wanted and in quantity they wanted. We ultimately walked out of that horrible place. Obviously this spoiled our mood for the whole evening. We were 7 people and probably would have paid enough but these are bunch of hungry people whose main aim is not to serve good food but try and get as much as they can from tourists.
Very poor indeed. Surly staff, little care taken with the food and very expensive for what it is. Watch out for the cost of 'cheap' items like poppadoms. Or in fact, don't even go there. The diners on the table next us rounded off their evening with a visit from the Police as the bill (no pun intended) was being so hotly disputed. A tourist/post-pub trap really.
This is the worst curry that I have ever had in my life. It was tasteless, overpriced and the service was really bad. The place obviously relies on the one-time tourists to keep it open, I will never go back!
