The ViewLondon Review
Just over the bridge from Westbourne Park station, this large and imposing venue offers informal drinking and dining in a relaxed setting on the bank of the Grand Union Canal.
The Venue
Split across two levels, there’s plenty of space inside the Grand Union, but tables on the terrace outside are the envious location in the summer. Set right on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the interior is light and airy with a mix of sumptuous sofas, restaurant-style seating and high-top bar tables. There’s a bar upstairs and downstairs, and the terrace has plenty of seating with patio heaters in preparation for the British weather.
The Atmosphere
Chilled out and relaxed, the Grand Union is the perfect place to unwind with a drink. You can sit on the terrace and watch the canal boats quietly saunter past, or sit back in the plush indoors. The terrace is likely to be busy on sunny days, but there’s plenty of space throughout this venue for everyone to find some room. Staff are attentive and helpful, and there’s a weekly quiz night if you’re feeling competitive.
The Food
There’s a refreshing list of food, from small to bigger dishes and sharing platters to meals from the grill. Haddock and dill fishcake with tartare sauce (£2.75) is tasty, but it could do with a little more fish and a little less potato. Whitebait and squid (£3.95) is a generous portion with perfectly succulent fish and a sweet chilli mayonnaise for dipping – an excellent starter that doesn’t leave you too full. Big dishes include American smoky sausages (£9.25) – a hearty portion with red onion jam, mash and gravy – and spicy lamb kebab (£11.50), a must-have from the grill, with feta salad, Greek yogurt, hummus and Turkish bread.
If you’re planning on a gathering for a group, there are a range of options from canapés to sharing platters and buffets, which can be ordered for around £7.50 per head.
The Drink
There are all the beers and spirits you’d expect from a proper pub. This is a Fuller’s pub so you can sip on pints of London Pride, or one of their other real ales. There’s a good wine list too. A 175ml glass of house wine starts from £3.90, a 500ml carafe from £10.50 and a bottle from £15.50. There’s also prosecco at £25 a bottle and house champagne from £40.
The Last Word
With really good food, great service and an extensive choice of drinks, not to mention the relaxing canal-side location, Grand Union is the ideal place for a chilled afternoon or evening in this part of town.
