Last night I took my wife and visiting Australian mate out to the Great Eastern Dining Room. The food was totally sensational, well proportioned, the service was excellent and the bill extremely reasonable. We all left with very big smiles and happy memories.
I have lived in London for over 10 years now and throughout that time, this restaurant has been one of my favourites for a special evening and the food consistently outstanding. My wife (who is a born and bred South Londoner) adores this place and is totally hooked on the Duck and Watermelon Salad.
Last night we shared a bottle of very smooth 2005 red wine, bottled water, two cocktails, five starters, three mains and three deserts all for under £140 including service charge. For food of this quality and the service we received, that is a total bargain!!
It has to be noted that the dining room is very small so don't expect to just turn up and eat. This seems to be what the last reviewer I read did and blamed his lack of organisation on the area and restaurant being poncy and "trying to be cool" which is totally ridiculous. This is possibly just a hang up of that reviewer.
I don't know anyone who goes to restraurants to be in some mythical cool group. You certainly don't go to Great Eastern Dining Room to be seen, be cool or be impressive. Go to have an amazing meal experience that makes your taste buds dance at a price that makes sense.
This one is best left to those 'hoxton fashionistas', or as I prefer to call them, 'those pretentious g*ts'.
This was actually my first dining experience in shoreditch and I was really intrigued by the place. However, upon entering at 7pm with my partner, we were factually told we could only have a table until 9 (this seems to be a trend with places wanting to create that uber trendy vibe). As it was an anniversary dinner we wanted a quiet corner, but were seated next to (or on top of) another couple, presumably as this 'uber trendy' place was to be packed in the next five minutes.
The menu was actually disappointing, the best bits were the starters- dim sum and prawns in tempura batter, but the portion size was definitely lacking. I ordered a glass of red which came half filled and warm (£4.50 for the privelege) and my partner ordered the 'Asahi' japenese beer. At one point the waiter, who I can only describe as looking like he was straight out of a 70's cops and robbers type film, came over and shook my partner's bottle of beer to see if he had finished it yet! this is the type of interference that really gets my back up. He came over several times to see if we had 'finished this or that' or wanted another or those etc. It was most intrusive and did not allow us to enjoy our meal in peace.
The mains menu included garlic duck but seemed over priced at £16. I ordered a duck curry which was chucked in a bowl with some sliced chillies (in keeping with the uber trendiness one can only imagine), and was very disappointing as the sauce seemed not unlike an Uncle Bens one out of a jar...
By this point we just wanted to eat and go as the conversations on either side of us were leaving no space for romance. We asked for the bill which was extortionate. I have had better food in my local chinese, which incidently has a better class of people dining there than these toffs, who all look like they would cry for their mothers when face to face with a real hackney local...
Came here the other night with some girlfriends - and we were very excited because we had heard great things about the restaurant. We decided the order a bunch of plates to share because everything looked delicious and we wanted to try it all.
The food was delicious and we ordered second plates of some because they were so good...But we were let down by one.
We ordered the beef san choi bau and upon tasting, it was terribly salty. All of us agreed and, apologetically, we notified the waitress. The woman who had started out as such a lovely person, immediately became cold and defensive - saying there was nothing wrong with it immediately & that it had been served all night long with no complaints - making it seem like it was our fault. Finally, she begrudingly took it back to the kitchen. After a while, she came back and, even after we apologized again & said the rest of the food was delicious, disdainfully said that the chef tried it and that there was nothing wrong with it - making us feel very embarrassed.
At the end of the meal, they still charged us for the dish, even though we had sent it back. They corrected this, and after we paid, the waitress immediately went to the front desk (10 ft away from us) and confirmed with the hostess that we gave her a full tip (which we debated a long time about after our decision).
I have never been treated so appallingly by a restaurant, when we just felt that the dish was too salty. We were immediately made to feel embarrassed and wrong - no apologies, just attitude. It was a terrible experience and I will never return to the Great Eastern Dining Room again.
I went here on A Saturday night for a friends 30th Birthday. The food was delicious, and the staff (apart from one) were all incredibly helpful and efficient.
Unfortunately the one member of staff, possibly the manager (a tall, slim, mixed raced man) was extremely rude and obnoxious, he kept trying to hurry us, even though we had a £720 bill (between sixteen of us) and were only seated between 7.00pm and 9.00pm. We didn't even drink that much, we would have had we been left in peace, and had a set menu of £24 a head so were extremely shocked when we had to pay £45 each, there were itmes on the bill we were not sure who had ordered but as it was such a large group we didn't want to dispute. Many people were not prepared for this so had to pay by card and this waiter was very rude to those people and actually told them they should have been more prepared and bought cash, even thought the restaurant clearly states that they accept cards!
Downstairs in the club was reasonable, smiley staff, but unfortunatley the experience upstairs had jaded it for most of us. Maybe we were just unlucky.
I just went here on Saturday night and the place was fab.
Food was great - delicious Asian food and we had cocktails before at the bar and then after dinner we went downstairs to their bar / dj area til about 1am.
I would seriously recommend this place if you are anywhere near Hoxton....
I went here on Wednesday night with a girlfriend and had a lovely time. The food was amazing - really authentic and tasty! Plus we were having a bit of a heart to heart and they just left us to it which was greatly appreciated. I totally recommend this place.
I was at Great Eastern Dining Room over Christmas and it was amazing. There was a fantastic buzz in the stylish surroundings and the service and food was brilliant. The pan-Asian menu was great for sharing with my work colleagues and we also enjoyed cocktails in the chic bar downstairs from the Great Eastern Dining Room.
The Great Eastern Dining Room isn't as popular as it used to be, but to be honest, it's nice not to be vying for a table with the Hoxton fashionistas. The food's mainly Oriental and after a proper feed, you can go downstairs to The Great Eastern Dining Room's bar and get happily leathered.
