An American friend and I wandered in here late (10pm) on Saturday night and were greeted by a warm, friendly, casual Australian waiter who welcomed us to take a seat by the window. The setting was a little dark but quite romantic and super friendly and cosy. Service was quick but even at 11:40 as we lingered over wine, did not feel rushed. We met 3-4 waitstaff who were all very friendly and interested in our day and what we thought of the meal. Which was outstanding. My friend ordered rabbit, snails and bacon and I had Veal in Buttermilk. Lots of meat, excellent quality, very tender. My only complaint is that these mains aren't served with any sides so ordered new potatoes and a green herby salty salad to share (both good). Would have loved some dauphinoise or something to counter balance the dark richness of the meat. The desserts of salty caramel icecream and creme brulee were outstanding and the house wine was an excellent French selection, which rounded off the meal perfectly. In all, a great little local-flavored find, in the heart of all the other touristy, chain restaurant tack around Covent Garden. Recommended!
I'm all in favour of hearty English fare, well sourced and simply but carefully prepared. However, that was not my experience last night at 32 Great Queen Street. My starter of Spanish beans was virtually tasteless, so simply was it prepared in a watery tomato jus with some dark green cabbage. However, far worse was to come with the chuck steak. I ordered it rare as I was offered a choice of medium rare or rare. It looked appetising enough, for a piece of chuck steak, but it smelt off. Sawing into it with difficulty (well, I knew it wasn't fillet steak) it tasted off. By off, I mean high - gamey, but in a bad way.
I like my pheasant, partridge and venison to have a gamey flavour and I am a great fan of aged beef (e.g. a la Mark Hix) but beef that is high does nothing for me. On pointing this out to our arrogant and rude waiter, he told me thay hang it for 35 days to improve it. I reckon that was at least a week too long. He whisked it off to show the chef who apparently tasted nothing unususal in the meat. He didn't offer to replace it and I had gone off the idea anyway so I had a few of the excellent chips and tasted my friend's perfectly acceptable, if rather earnest and dull, partridge. Oh, and we had to send back our stone cold cabbage.
At the end of our meal, the same waiter patronisingly advised us that they disagreed with my assessment of the chuck steak but that they had removed the cost from the bill. Since I had eaten two small mouthfuls I don't think he had much choice there. My "beef" with this restaurant is twofold: a truly bad meal served with no apology. If anyone else last night was served and finished a chuck steak from the same piece of meat, I feel for their digestive system.
What a great place! Five of us went there for dinner for the first time on Friday 10th July 2009.
We were served by a young waiter - Jackson - who was absolutely charming, super-efficient and - as an added bonus - strikingly good-looking!
The food was excellent: we all ordered different dishes and everyone really enjoyed their meal.
The menu was so interesting and varied. And, the price was perfectly reasonable. The place itself attracts an appealing mix of age groups and types.
We took my 84 year old mother and she loved it! It was busy and buzzy but there was no sense of being rushed or being neglected: just an ideal level of friendly attentiveness.
This restaurant is definitely one to visit and enjoy.
This place used to be good but is now let down in spectacular style by the service - we went on Sunday and the manager was incredibly rude.
It seems to have rubbed off on the staff too. The food is middling, you'd do much better to try the Garrison in SE1 or the Eagle in EC1 (great service too).
Unless you're happy to be sneered at, be served the wrong food and then have a some sarcastic remarks if you dare to point it out, I'd avoid at all costs.
Genuinely disappointing but a new low in service, which is something I suppose.
I went to this pub a few weeks ago with my husband and another friend. The food and service were absolutely fantastic and I will definitely be going back. I also thought that for the quality of the food, the bill (at £70 for three including a bottle of wine) was very reasonable. I have recommended this place to everyone - you must go there!
The lemon sole at Great Queen Street was exceptional. I really want it again but it turns out the menu changes daily so I guess I'll be sampling something equally marvellous next time! Great Queen Street really is a fantastic place. Highly recommended.
