We visited Grumbles for the first time in December 2011. Friendly, informal atmosphere, quick service, pleasant and helpful staff, with an interesting menu and sensible prices. Our starters of tiger prawns, then mains of grilled hake with roasted pumpkin and beer battered fish and chips, with a half bottle of wine, were delicious. The puddings and cheeses looked equally inviting. The plates were warm and the helpings generous. A well thought out and well presented menu. We can highly recommend this restaurant.
Yuck! Cold food with extremely small portions on a cold plate; this is not what I call a fine Sunday roast. The beef and lamb were very chewy for all 7 of us. I used to frequent Grumbles in the late 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s; what's gone wrong with the place?
ROYSTON VASEY is the best way to describe this awful place. I live local and have been there twice - never again!
Unfriendly staff, poor service and canteen quality food. We had the steak and chips along with a pasta and I've honestly had better quality from a 'ready meal'.
Just three tables were being used during a busy lunch hour yet we had to sit at a cramped table for two.
Their tables always have reserved signs on them yet nobody seems to turn up. We dared asked for a larger table and paid the price by way of very unpleasant service. Precious things ...yuck.
Fortunately the area is full of excellent gastro pubs and good restaurants. W. Revell
My second visit to Grumbles. The first passed pleasantly enough, if not memorably. This the second, was a disaster from start to very swift finish.I'm afraid I must now consider myself biased as a result: read-on.
I arrived with my friend, looking for a quiet port of call for 1/2- 3/4 hour or so, whilst we waited for the locksmith to let her back into locked-out local pied a terre.
We asked if we could stay at the bar to drink; and that we might order some food. Duly seated upstairs, we waited to be served drinks, which followed after a bit a few reminders. The locksmith apparently on the way, we asked if we could skip the food and finish our drinks. Officious waiter/major domo says no. The place will be booked-up in the hour and so if he is to serve us, he must do so now.
I must point out that whilst I understand this is perfectly reasonable, the gaff was approximately 1/5 full, or 4/5ths empty, depending upon your point of view, at the time.
I ask if we can order some token food. No sir, says he - you must order a main course - it is not a bar. Fine, say I, I don't mind, we'll order some food, but tbh we don't care to eat it. Officious waiter doesn't like our attitude and asks us to leave.
We have been relaxed and polite throughout. My friend was a regular there - no more. I may have visited once or twice in the coming year - no more.
Note to owner of Grumbles: your restaurant was mostly empty at the time. We were well disposed towards the place, and we were happy to spend. We are neither now. I doubt your French waiter has cost you less than £500 revenue in the coming year.
Grumbles is an absolute gem in Pimlico! This website has classified the food as French, but it's not really, it's more like Modern European, with jazzed up versions of British, French and Italian dishes at reasonable prices and a pretty great wine list to match. You can't go wrong with pretty much anything on the menu, and I've never had a bad meal in this place. It's a very small restaurant, but the service is impeccable and I'd recommend it for dates, catch up dinners with friends and family and big get-togethers. We had a big party there recently and somehow they managed to get all the food out hot and at the same time, which is pretty tricky in a place so small. Don't forget to book unless you're heading there early.
Grumbles is so the wrong word for this restaurant. ‘Happy smiles’, ‘contented giggles’ – even, just plain ‘happy’ would do.
The food is great at Grumbles – go there now.
