If you have a sweet tooth and you’re on Stoke Newington High Street then you must pop into Gulluoglu Patisserie. Not only are they very friendly but they’re sweet, too.

The Venue
Gulluoglu Patisserie has one of the nicer shop windows on Stoke Newington High Street. Located slightly up from the police station and on the other side of the road, this Turkish patisserie is easy to find and certainly worth the walk. You’ll notice it from the stripy maroon canopies and little flower pots in the large windows. Sitting behind the window facing the High Street you’ll find staff making the bread for their savoury wraps with the traditional coal-fire equipment. This is a great feature of the patisserie and a definite head-turner for those walking down the street.

As you walk inside you’ll notice they’ve gone for a light colour scheme. The walls have been painted yellow and the ceiling white whilst the floor tiles are a light beige colour. The light colours and open space make this patisserie feel especially clean as does the ceiling fan which keeps the air circulating. Lining the window facing Hallar Road is a series of four or five tables and lining the opposite wall is the large counter displaying the vast array of sugary pastries.

The Atmosphere
The staff create a very warm atmosphere and make you feel at home as soon as you walk through the door. Clearly a favourite among some of the locals, a few regulars pop their head in every now and again just to say hello without actually buying anything. The Arabic music playing from the mini hi-fi is great for breaking what would otherwise be a dull silence.

The Food
The assortment of Turkish pastries at Gulluoglu Patisserie quite varied. However, they’re all sweet – some are bite-size finger foods while others will fill a small plate. Ask for one that isn’t so sweet and the suggestions offered will include the rice pudding and an apple tart that has been heavily coated in icing sugar and topped off with a bright red cherry. Unfortunately the apple pie is quite dry and so doesn’t come high up on the recommended list. If you don’t fancy a pastry you can always opt for one of the wraps which are made at the cafe. They are quite substantial and look very appetising indeed.

The Drink
Standing in the corner is the refrigerator holding canned drinks as Coca-Cola and Sprite whilst those in need of some juice can buy a cup of orange or a dark berry concoction.

The Last Word
Gulluoglu Patisserie is a lovely little patisserie on Stoke Newington High Street serving up all kinds of little Turkish delights. Certainly worth a visit if you have a sugar craving.
