The ViewLondon Review
A twinkly, fresh alternative to the depressing, greasy glare of commercial burger chains.
The Venue
Off Camden High Street with Camden’s fruit and vegetable market on its doorstep, Hache is not what you’d expect from a burger bar. The general atmosphere of Hache is more upmarket brasserie than McDonalds. Judicious use of fairy lights, muted tones and woods and a bit of personality make this a pleasant, if cramped dining experience.
The Atmosphere
The narrow site means diners are at close quarters, but its generally a good humoured place, with well meaning, if sometimes confused staff. The mix is less youth-orientated than many Camden haunts, so it’s a family friendly venue.
The Food
A large selection of burgers in imaginative combinations. The burgers are wonderful. Well-seasoned, well-cooked meat with ciabatta buns capable of standing up to a generous dousing of sauce and fresh red onion, tomato and rocket to garnish. The lamb burger is particularly good, with a selection of redcurrant and yoghurt and mint sauces providing a perfect foil to the juicy patty. The Canadian (cheddar, bacon, lettuce and tomato) is a great classic choice.
For sides there is a choice of fries or chips and the fries are perfect, but the onion rings let the side down. The onion is a little cloying and sweet, the batter a little too greasy and would benefit from more of a kick, less of a limp. The sauce selection is impressive – English, Dijon and American mustards and the ubiquitous ketchup.
The Drink
A small, standard selection of white, red and rose wines and beers – not all as chilled as you’d like. Hache also does a good line in smoothies and fresh juices.
The Last Word
Junk food made good and a trip to burger heaven without the guilty aftermath.
