Hamburger Union is a great place to grab a quick bite of a delicious burger in a busy atmosphere with the main focus on the food.

The Venue
Don’t come to Hamburger Union if you’re looking for a posh atmosphere, this place is bare and simple, but it works. Everything that surrounds you is the same colour of dark wood, but this makes the old fashioned mustard and ketchup bottles stand out on each table, highlighting the restaurant’s diner influences. All the tables are basically the same, and with only a couple of boards showing the menu, this is an uncomplicated fuss free place to eat. Though at times it feels like a school canteen, the interesting mix of characters and food lifts the tone of the restaurant.

The Atmosphere
This seems a haven for all sorts that wander the streets of Covent Garden. Office types, families and tourists create an eclectic mix of people, and the strong sense of informality make the ambience effortlessly relaxed. Upbeat, unintrusive music adds to the lively character. This isn’t a place to mull over your thoughts as you slowly enjoy your food since at peak times there is an element of immediacy to the dining due to speedy service and fast turnover, but it’s perfect for tasty fast food that’s not dripping in fat.
The Food
If you’ve come for a burger, which one would assume that you have, then you’ve come to the right place. They’ve stripped the menu down to the bare essentials, a handful of burger choices, some sides and a few veggie options also. Fitting in with the sense of functionality of the restaurant, they avoid unnecessary thrills which is totally refreshing.

Their burgers range from classics such as a cheeseburger for £4.65 to some unique versions like chorizo for £5.15 and citrus marinated Halloumi cheese for £5.15 so there’s something for everyone. The ciabatta bun is a nice change from tasteless packaged burger baps, and succeeds at keeping together in your hands. The meat patty is delicious and the salad, sauces and other extras you might like have more subtle flavours than expected, which on their own are bland but together combine to create a complex flavour. However, if you’re a meat lover then go for a double burger as the normal patty is a bit thin. The chips are thick and fluffy and the salads are fresh and crunchy, so even though they cost extra they are a lovely addition to the meal.

The Drink
Don’t expect anything out of the ordinary, Hamburger Union offers only the usual drinks menu of soft drinks, some beers and wines and also milkshakes. The vanilla milkshake is creamy with a sweet vanilla flavour. What they do serve, however simple, they do it well.

The Last Word
Hamburger Union is the ultimate alternative to fast food hamburger chains; it’s quick and tasty with the added bonus of being a much more pleasant dining experience.
