The ViewLondon Review
Henry J Bean opened 15 years ago and is still going strong. The best thing about this huge American style bar is the large beer garden at the back with its outdoor heaters, a barbecue, a charming fountain and a tree, which was apparently planted during the reign of Elizabeth I.
Inside there’s a long bar down one wall, wooden booths in a raised area down another and in the corners you will find leather sofas. It’s not nearly as impressive as the garden and has the feel of a chain pub.
However, there is a happy vibe about this place and although the food couldn’t be described as exquisite, it was reasonably priced and filling. Burgers, chicken, loaded potato skins and nachos are the kind of things you’ll get here. I had ‘The Best Grilled Chicken Sandwich In The World’ which consisted of an open-faced toasted garlic ciabatta topped with blackened chicken fillet, lettuce, beef tomato, finished with spicy guacamole and served with chips. I think they might have exaggerated the ‘best sandwich’ thing a bit, but the chicken was tasty and tender and the portion was generous.
Overall a very satisfactory lunch – washed down with a Tropicana (Bacardi, coconut, banana, strawberry and pineapple). Delicious.
