The ViewLondon Review
A small cafe and deli on Battersea Park Road, close to the junction with Latchmere Road, with great coffee, fresh salads, sumptuous cakes and internet access.
The Venue
ll Molino stands out from other shops on this section of Battersea Park Road, thanks to the purple woodwork on the window and door frames. There are a small number of tables on the pavement outside, on the corner of Balfern Street. Inside, the cafe is fairly small and can feel a little cramped – there’s not much room between tables for those carrying bags and pushchairs need to be left at the door.
Most tables are for two, with a couple of larger tables and a bar with stools overlooking the street. A good selection of magazines and newspapers are provided and generally litter the tables. The shelves are lined with Italian produce – tinned artichokes and the like.
The Atmosphere
Due to the size there is a cosy feel about the cafe, although if it’s busy don’t expect a quiet moment. Noise from the coffee machine and buses passing outside is constant. With tables positioned close together it’s also not the place to come for private conversation. Staff are young, friendly and the service is good. Clientele ranges from the local and the well-heeled to students and some families at the weekend.
The Food
Eat in or takeaway – the freshly made salads are a good choice. Pasta and pesto with tomato and avocado is extremely fresh and each component generously served. Tomato and mozzarella, and rice and bean salad are other regulars – a small costs around £3 and large around £5. Paninis and quiche are around £3 and the breakfast menu includes pastries (croissants, pain au chocolat) for £2 and a ham and cheese toasted sandwich for £3.
Save room for heavenly cake – carrot cake and banana and toffee cakes are around £2.50 per slice. Cookies and muffins are also available for around £2. Also £2 are the best chocolate brownies for miles – rich, moist and served in almost bite-size blocks... it’s hard not to order more than one.
The Drink
Coffee, tea and fresh juice serviced in tall glasses – a small is £1.75, a regular is £2 and a large is £2.60. The volume of takeaways confirms the quality of the coffee.
The Last Word
A relaxed, arty cafe with a lively local buzz. The menu is fairly small but food is fresh and the cakes alone make a visit worthwhile.
