The ViewLondon Review
Imli is one of a handful of refreshingly different London restaurants fusing Indian cuisine and tapas style dining to great effect. The VenueWell located in Soho but potentially easy to overlook from the street, Imli is a deceptively large venue with both an upstairs and downstairs dining area. The bright decor and close seating quarters are in keeping with the informal tapas style of dining although it is hard not to feel that more could be made of the space.
The AtmosphereThis place has the relaxed and convivial vibe that you would expect given its Wardour Street address. Somewhere between a cafe and restaurant the emphasis is on casual dining and Imli pulls in a large young crowd on a nightly basis. The service is outstanding, the friendly and professional staff are always on hand but never overbearing. Each dish is carefully explained and the waiters appear to be both knowledgeable and passionate about the food. Even more impressive is that even on a busy night the service still retains that personal touch.
The FoodWhilst the concept may sound gimmicky Indian cuisine lends itself surprisingly well to tapas style dishes. The idea is to provider a lighter, more varied dining experience to the traditional curry house. The menu includes variations on some of familiar dishes as well as some options that are exclusive to the restaurant, with dishes ranging from about £3 to about £8.
Diners are encouraged to order around three plates per person to share from a selection of light hot and cold tapas, meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes. With so much to choice it is easy to over order but although the dishes are small they can be surprisingly filling. If you can’t decide then opt for one of the tasting menus, which represent a good selection of dishes, or let your waiter choose for you.
The dishes are all well executed and beautifully presented. If you are looking for some lighter dishes to start with go for the prawn and mango salad. The exotic mango and delicate seafood flavours are combined with a zesty lime and coriander dressing. The Papdi Chaat, a traditional Indian snack, is another great choice, an unusual combination of wheat crisps with sweet yoghurt and mint that is surprisingly addictive. The melt in the mouth Masala Grilled chicken should not be missed. Served with a vibrant yellow creamy cumin and turmeric mash and bright green avocado paste it also looks as good as it tastes. For the seafood fan the plump and sesame and garlic prawns should be a hit. If you are more of a traditionalist then go for the Chicken Harlyali or Biriyani - mini curries with rice.
Whilst Indian restaurants are not always renowned for their desserts make sure you save some room. The creamy fig and ginger ice cream is rich, tasty and made on the premises. Equally whilst carrot and condensed milk might not sound like an appetising combination the carrot fudge also comes highly recommended.
The DrinkIf you want to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail the Passion Bellinis are small but perfectly formed. The wine list at Imli is short and functional with only four reds and four whites to choose from. Prices are in keeping with the food, starting at about £14 for a bottle and everything is available by the glass. There is also a limited selection of beer. For those trying to stay off the alcohol there are some great alternatives including mango and strawberry lassis or a pressed pear and lychee drink.
The Last WordStyle, substance and five star service put Imli way ahead of the pack in this price range.
