Obnoxious service. The staff is simple rude and possibly the worst attitude I've ever experience. I highly urge everyone who has stumbled across this posting to simply avoid patronizing this restaurant. Notify your friends and about it. This is a let-down to the reputation of all other established Chinese restaurant. They should do the world a favor and just close down.
worst service ever, totally mood-destroying experience. The food is good, but the service brings down everything. The people there lack some basic manners as adults. Steer away from this place.
Absolutely shocking!
Working in the area, I have been to Jia about three times, every time very unsatisfied with the service. The food is average and the service is absolutely unlike anything I've ever seen. I arrived with some work colleagues of mine about 3 mins before the opening time and found the door open, we wondered if it was alright if we could come in because it was absolutely freezing outside. They said no very aggressively which already surprised us. Just before entering the restaurant when it finally opened, someone from the restaurant exited, and at that instant, one of the waitresses closed the door on us. We then asked if they were not ready to open yet but the waitress exclaimed to us that it was because it was "TOO COLD!" and tried to start an argument. We decided to let this go, and try and have a pleasant lunch. The food we ordered arrived at completely different times, so none of us had our starters at the same time. We decided that we wouldn't pay the optional service charge because of the "extraordinary" service. This however, did no please the waitress at all, and complained that we hadn't paid enough ( this shouldn't be an issue as service charge is always optional ).
The whole experience was a nightmare, do not recommend this place at all, much prefer the Italian's in the area.
I have lived in China and love Chinese food. The Cantonese food at Jia is authentic and presented really well. They also offer dim sum which is so popular that you cannot book for Sunday lunch. The menu is not as daring as places like My Old Place or Mongolian Legends, it is a foreign and entry level Chinese diner friendly menu.
The Hong Kong man who works there, (possibly a manager?), is very friendly; the other staff can be quite curt but I think that is due to language problems. It is difficult to find a Cantonese restaurant with really friendly service at this price range, I think it's a cultural thing. Once they did take out rubbish bags past our tables when we were finishing, although it was quite late before closing, which offended my mother.
Overall, it is one of my fall back Chinese restaurants in South Kensington. It is probably the most elegant one in the area, modern interior. I would recommend it.
Terrible terrible service - don't waste your money! I will make this review as constructive as possible: I have visited this restaurant twice. Once when it first opened, and the other last Saturday. When I first went, I liked the decor and the management seemed very friendly and attentive. In some ways over attentive, but I put that down to them welcoming every new customer and wanting to do their best. The second time was last Saturday. This is how I would sum up the service:There are 2 floors to the restaurant. We asked to sit upstairs by the window - which looked quieter and with a view. There were hardly any people in the restaurant for a peak time of Saturday night. There was nobody upstairs, so me and my 2 friends thought we'd get some good undisturbed quality time together. However, what happened was that we were 'sent' a waitress to pester us constantly about whether we'd decided or not. That was not the worst of it. She then very unsubtly proceeded to stand in front of our table and listen in to every word in our private conversation, at some points butting into the conversation herself! My friend gave me some gifts for my recent birthday. The waitress then stood over our table to watch me unwrap my gifts and then asked "is it your birthday today?" I replied that it was a couple of weeks back. Then I was sharing photos from a holiday at the table, and this waitress started trying to peer over almost as if to nose in on our photos! We then had a conversation about sweet and sour foods, and she butted in to say that Jia's sweet and sour dishes were "the best". Nobody had even asked her to join or for her opinion. Then, after we'd eaten, rather than ask us if we wanted coffee/liqueurs etc, we were given the bill and FINALLY left alone to enjoy our company rather than hers. They wanted us to pay quickly and even made a mistake on the bill. The food is good, but not worth the prices, and the restaurant has never been full every time I walk past. This speaks volumes
Really good, high quality food and stunning interiors. South Kensington had been crying for a restaurant of this kind.
The extensive menu encompasses a wide range of Chinese dishes that range from the traditional to the adventurous, and everything is prepared with tasty, good quality ingredients and presented beautifully.
The portions are usually very generous too, and service is attentive and friendly. Currently our favourite Chinese restaurant this side of London. 20% off take-away orders is a huge bonus too. Would instantly recommend it to anyone looking for a great Chinese meal in a stunning location.
Bad chinese food. Even worse service.
Very expensive for what it is.
In few words: stay away from this trap.
