My husband Kevin and I just had dinner at Joanna's on Friday. I have to say that we both agree that it was THE BEST meal we have EVER eaten! I recommend anyone visiting Crystal Palace needs to experience this restaurant! Thank you Chef and staff for making my husband's birthday so special! - Kate & Kevin
My mother and husband arranged a meal for my 40th.
My mum had made a surprise Birthday cake which she had kept a secret. My husband managed to get it to the restaurant without me knowing.
I arrived with my mother before anyone else and I asked if everything was OK.She said yes and also that the cake had been delivered by my husband......Surprise ruined.
My mother was upset. After all that the food was overpriced and the steaks, medium to well done, were more cremated.
Then after all that a discretionary service charge was added......I thought discretionary meant if I wanted to or not.
After the disappointment I really didn't want to leave the service charge but was made to feel very uncomfortable.
Don't think we will be going back.
Joanna's is a south London institution and deservedly so. A haven of elegant calm in the hell that is Crystal Palace. The food's good too. I've been going for years and find the cooking assured and well executed. Service is professional, courteous and efficient. Portions are reasonable rather than generous (except the burger which is huge) but are certainly not miniscule. Prices are reasonable for food of this quality. Decent wine list. I've always found the place child friendly but then I tend to come when its quiet. A really excellent brasserie style local.
I first ate in Joanna's in the early days when I really did NOT rate it at all. Although the menu has improved immeasurably over the years, unfortunately the service is a bit 'hit and miss'... It's a great place for a 'grown-up' meal, but Joanna's is really not 'child-friendly', which is a great shame as that would make it close to perfect...
I would definitely travel across London to eat at Joannas. It is probably the nicest restaurant I have ever been to. I have eaten at Joannas three times now and was completely satisfied with the impressive service, delicious food and reasonable prices. If you love you food you must try this restaurant.
Joanna's is a nice restaurant but I wouldn't have thought it was worth venturing across London for. Joanna's is probably best left to the locals who seem to love it as it's always packed.
