Co-founder and former chef of Spanish restaurant group Brindisa, José Pizarro, has opened his own tapas and sherry bar in a compact space in Bermondsey – and it’s going to be a hit.

The Venue
A tiny venue on a corner of Bermondsey Street with just enough space to seat 30 people, the minimalist interior lets the food speak for itself. Dark furniture is complemented by washes of natural light and gives the place a secluded, cosy feel. There’s a well-stocked bar in the centre of the room and views straight into the kitchen, so you’ll see plenty being prepared on the stove.

The Atmosphere
There’s a no-booking policy at José, but a lot of people want to eat here, so be prepared to wait for a table. Most seats benefit from the light that floods in through the windows and, with such a small space, you can expect a vibrant atmosphere full of conversation at any time of day. This place is all about informal eating and drinking, so order a few plates and enjoy the hustle and bustle. Staff are passionate about the restaurant and will happily go into detail about anything on the menu.

The Food
The daily changing menu offers authentic Spanish tapas, created using the best fresh ingredients sourced from the markets that day. Dishes may include pisto and crispy duck egg (£5.50) – tomato, peppers and onion on toasted bread topped with a flavoursome soft egg – crab and basil croquettes (£6), tortilla (£3.50), asparagus with Iberico ham (£7) and chorizo in red wine (£5), which is impossibly melt-in-the-mouth meat with a robust, mouthwatering sauce – it’s absolutely delicious. You’re also sure to find plenty of favourites, such as cured meats and cheeses.

The Drink
There's an array of sherries to enjoy, from dry to sweet, so you can truly feel as though you’re relaxing with a drink in a traditional Spanish taverna. For those who aren’t so keen on sherry, there is a good range of wines and a couple of beers, too – all chosen to support the wonderful food coming out of the kitchen. Staff are more than happy to talk you through your choices should you need any help.

The Last Word
Although in its very early days, José has the potential to join Brindisa as one of capital's favourite tapas restaurants. And with the combination of a vibrant atmosphere and authentic food and drink, it could yet become the best.
