Sophisticated, modern Turkish dining in chic Pimlico.

The Venue
In the midst of Pimlico’s main row of bijou cafes and independent restaurants, you will find Kazan. A modern Turkish restaurant, it serves up traditional Middle Eastern cuisine in contemporary, sophisticated surroundings. The main dining room is a light, open space with neutral beiges and dark wooden tables. Beside this room is a smaller bar which is a more informal area and goes further to embrace the Turkish vibe, with traditional brass lamps and carved wooden decorations – a lovely room to enjoy a post-dinner mint tea while reclining on the red banquettes.

The Atmosphere
Kazan has built up a fantastic local reputation and has a loyal army of Pimlico fans. As such it is full most lunchtimes with Victoria office workers, while the evenings are busy with locals. This bustling trade means there is a nice buzz about the place. The décor is essentially quite smart, but the relaxed service means that it doesn’t feel too formal, but somewhere you can relax over some good food and wine.

The Food
A large and varied menu delivers a fresh and modern take on traditional Turkish cuisine. Turkish food can often teeter on the greasy or stodgy, but the food at Kazan is light and fresh - the good quality ingredients really shine through. Herby olives and creamy hummus served with traditional soft Turkish bread speckled with sesame seeds whets the appetite. The mouth-watering mezze are the highlight of the menu – from fluffy tabouleh sprinkled with fresh pomegranate seeds to crispy spinach and ricotta borek parcels to punchy halloumi cheese – each dish is a treat. The drunken calamari – squid marinated in vodka - is tender and tasty.

To follow, the main courses are generous sizes – this is a great restaurant for hearty eaters. Monkfish and prawn kebabs are served with a generous selection of rice and salad. Dedicated carnivores can celebrate their love of meat with The Ottoman Grill, a selection of lamb and chicken shish, fresh poussin, lamb chop and kofte, all served with hot, fluffy chunky chips. Complete your Turkish feast with a cup of strong black Turkish coffee served with oversized Turkish Delight tumbling in icing powder.

The Drink
A very extensive wine list is specially selected to work well with the cuisine. For each wine there is a suggestion for which dishes it would suit. A False Bay South African Sauvignon is light and crispy and recommended to go with prawns and scallops. For lamb dishes, a full-bodied Turkish Yakut Rouge red is suggested. A tempting range of cocktails are also on offer, from a classic mojito to a special Marrakech Roses – a mix of gin, pineapple juice, grenadine and Ricard. The Kazan Special champagne cocktail combines vodka, fresh lime, elderflower and apple with cinnamon and champagne. And if it’s a special occasion, a bottle of Cristal at £250 is available.

The Last Word
Kazan is the kind of restaurant people go back to time and time again - its chic surroundings, efficient, friendly service and mouth-watering modern Turkish food are a winning combination.
