The ViewLondon Review
Celebrity chef Anthony Worrall Thompson’s restaurant invites you to sample real food for real people and he certainly excels at delivering just that. The VenueLocated just off Kew Green, inside the classic decor coupled with subtle contemporary furnishings and a brick lined wall creates a relaxed feel even though the restaurant itself is no bigger than a grand lounge.
Credit where credit's due, they have used the space well especially when gazing upon the busy kitchen team running the lunch or dinner service. However, this doesn’t detract from the cosy intimate dining experience and is equally suited to a family get together or dinner for two.
The AtmosphereThe buzzy ambiance can become noisy particularly if the restaurant is full but don’t let this detract from the overall effect. Just sit back and soak it up. The tables are so close together you almost feel that you are at a family gathering but the waiters are both attentive and approachable and tend to every query without any fuss. Booking in advance is strongly recommended though as it does become very busy.
The FoodThe menu offers simple, uncomplicated Modern British food which includes haddock and cod fishcakes but mainly this is a carnivore’s paradise. Starters include classics such as potted shrimps and eggs Benedict. But it is the quality of meat that will make you want to return again and again. Worrall Thompson has certainly proved his reputation for top quality beef. The Aberdeen Angus steaks hung for 35 days are sublime as is the 100 day old free range chicken. It’s advisable to order at least one side dish with the creamed spinach and truffle mash scoring high marks.
For the meat novice the menu provides an explanation of the different cooking stages of beef which is a nice touch. Whilst when it comes to rounding off the meal there is a choice of classic desserts to indulge in. The trio of ice creams and sorbets offer a superb alternative with flavours ranging from after dinner mint to elderflower.
The DrinkThere is an extensive wine list to choose from with a glass or a bottle to suit every diner’s wallet, from South Africa to Chile and back again with a good choice of champagnes and aperitifs. In addition you can end with a refreshing peppermint or chamomile tea.
The Last WordKew Grill is a firm favourite amongst the locals who mainly flock for the superb selection of meat and Worrall Thompson is clearly onto a winner here.
