The ViewLondon Review
An authentic Eritrean cafe and restaurant with friendly staff.
The Venue
Located in Vauxhall, not far from the station, this small East African eatery serves a variety of authentic Eritrean dishes. The place is small with a couple of tables near the bar up front and more tables at the back. The interior is simple, with small tables, and not much decorating the walls.
The Atmosphere
Kitfo House has more of a cafe feeling than that of a restaurant and the customers seem to be locals mixed with Eritrean ex-pats, and people seem to come here for a quick beer just as much as the food. The loud music switches quickly from African beats to UK hits. Staff are very friendly, taking the time to chat to diners about Eritrea – they even have a book about the country if you’re interested in learning about it. If it’s your first time at the restaurant they’ll happily explain the food and recommend dishes.
The Food
Eritrean cuisine uses many of the same spices as in Indian food and can be quite similar, but there are also many non-spicy dishes as well. All the dishes come with injera, a sour bread that looks and tastes like a large, lemony pancake. Your chosen dish (which is usually in the form of stew or curry) is then poured onto the injera which acts as a plate and you scoop up the food with more injera bread that comes on the side. Cutlery is non-existent, here you eat the authentic way – with your hands.
The food is cheap and costs between £5 to £7 for each dish, including the injera bread. The menu offers plenty of vegetarian and lamb dishes, beef dishes, about three chicken options and only one fish choice. There are also special platters on offer (one meat and one vegetarian) which consists of a mixture of dishes for £12 – this is a great choice for beginners or those who can’t make up their minds. Chicken dorho is a spicy stew made with tender chicken and egg. The portion initially looks small, but it’s very filling. The Dorho sauce soaks into the bread, leaving it flavorsome and very tasty to eat. Kitfo House also serves English breakfasts in the morning and Thai food at lunch.
The Drink
There is a fully licensed bar up front, serving wine, beer (bottled and draft) and soft drinks. On offer is also Eritrean tea (which tastes of cinnamon) and strong, thick coffee.
The Last Word
An enjoyable experience. Although the place has more of a local cafe feel, the food is tasty and the staff are very friendly.
