The ViewLondon Review
Since Yo! Sushi opened its doors in 1997, the London sushi scene has become more synonymous with robots and manga cartoons than with delicate cuisine. It’s hard to believe that people were tucking into raw fish back in dark ages beforehand.
And if you believe that you’ll believe anything! There’s been a Japanese community in London for years now, and they’ve been knocking out quality sushi for longer than most people give them credit for.
Kulu Kulu is a kaiten sushi bar, just like Yo. For those of you without a thorough grasp of gastronomic Japanese, this means conveyor belt. You wait to be seated alongside the revolving belt, and a variety of tasty fishy delights circulate until someone takes them off.
The plates are price coded, although I didn’t really take very much notice of this, as they all seemed pretty good value. My calorie counting sister didn’t either, and tucked in to a wide variety of nigiri sushi and hand rolls.
The counter was well stocked with all the required paraphernalia – wasabi, pickled ginger and soy sauce, and the drinks list was concise but satisfactory.
Judging by the mixture of Japanese and serious British (as opposed to camera snapping tourists) it is definitely an authentic and good value restaurant. It was also pretty busy.
If you’re planning to visit in a group of more than two the I’d advise turning up very early. To be honest, as you’ll be sitting in a row, it’s not really conducive to group conversation anyway.
I added my plates up after about 4, and realised that I’d only amassed a trifling sum. 2 or 3 more and I felt less guilty. Still, lunch for 2 and drinks still only came to about £20.
Kulu Kulu is a sushi restaurant for people who have a grasp of the proper ratio of style to substance. You won’t find any robots here…
