The ViewLondon Review
If you want a true Japanese experience, then this is the place to go. The Japanese culture of multiple small dishes to be eaten whilst socially drinking is epitomised at Kushi-Tei, and you get a true reflection of what it’s like to go out in Japan. The VenueKushi-Tei isn’t far from South Wimbledon tube station and is close to Wimbledon tube and tram stations. The venue itself is relatively small and pleasantly intimate without being cramped. There are the usual restaurant tables, and towards the back there is an open grill area where dishes are cooked over hot coals. Around this there is a small counter where you can sit facing the food grill and drinks area - a direct reflection of what you would experience in Japan.
The AtmosphereThe clientele here ranges from businessmen to groups of young people and families. A good reflection of the quality of the food is the obvious presence of a lot of Japanese customers. The staff in Kushi-Tei are generally very good and attentive. You are always greeted with the normal “irra shai ma” that is prevalent when entering shops and restaurants in Japan. They have a good knowledge of the menu and are happy to describe to you any ingredients or how the food is prepared.
The FoodThe food in Kushi-Tei is well prepared and attentively cooked. Those who fear the standard Japanese sushi and sashimi dishes, need not be concerned as this is predominantly a grill restaurant. Dishes range from Japanese salads with seaweed, to chicken wings and grilled tuna. The usual sushi is also available. The unagi (eel) in sweet soy sauce is especially succulent. Shrimp croquettes are excellent, with a crispy coating and flavoursome shrimp inside. The individual dishes are small (almost like tapas) so be prepared to order a number of them, but the prices are very reasonable, so you have the opportunity to try a wide range of chicken, fish, beef and lamb.
The DrinkThere are two Japanese draught beers available – Asahi and Kirin. There is also a small selection of wine. Sake is obviously available from a number of different makers, and all imported from Japan. One of the more up and coming and trendy Japanese drinks is also here – Shochu. Once again, another unique point about this restaurant is the ability to buy your own bottle of Sake and Shochu, write your name on it in black marker pen, and leave it for your next visit. This is also indicative of a traditional Japanese eatery or izzakaya.
The Last WordKushi-Tei is an excellent reflection of a true Japanese eatery. The atmosphere is very relaxing, the food is of a good quality and very reasonably priced, and you are always made to feel welcome. It provides excellent value for money – be prepared to pay around £15-£25 per head depending on how much you eat and drink.
