The ViewLondon Review
Fans of fromage will be in seventh heaven in this intimate French restaurant devoted especially to cheese - come and share your passion with friends.
The Venue
You’ll find this unique restaurant off one end of the busy King’s Road in Chelsea and you’ll be welcomed by a professional staff of helpful French waiters whose passion and knowledge for cheese and traditional French food is instantly evident. The scent of delicious cheese meets you as you step into this bright and intimate space full of simple wooden tables and chairs. There’s room for only about 16 upstairs and 16 downstairs, so be sure to book in advance.
The Atmosphere
With a limited capacity for large groups, L’Art du Fromage is ideal for smaller groups of friends or couples and makes a perfect spot for a first date! It has a quiet, calm atmosphere and that sense of something special which means it’s great for special occasions.
The Food
The menu combines classic French dishes, such as starters of foie gras, garlic snails and onion soup (priced at about £5 - £10), as well as those from the main cheese regions of France. Sharing dishes will make your experience all the more enjoyable so you might like to try the famous raclette (£23.50 per person) or cheese fondue (£16 - £17 per person depending on the cheese you choose).
Raclette involves taking a large wedge of raclette cheese and melting it between two heated elements. You can control how quickly the cheese melts on to the plates below or how grilled and crispy the rind becomes. You then pile your plate up with new potatoes, salami, parma ham and pickles and melt the creamy cheese on top. It’s all you can eat but make sure you save space for dessert.
If you don’t fancy sharing, you can always choose from a variety of tartiflettes made with potatoes, cream and onion (up to £13), pizza made with cream and onions (up to £11) or cheese tasting boards (up to £25) for the real cheese connoisseur. If cheese isn’t your thing, there’s also lamb rump steak and succulent tuna steak on a bed of sweet mango carpaccio and avocado salsa (about £16).
Still have room for dessert? There’s classic tiramisu and creme brulee, or you can continue the cheese theme with a tasting board boasting six varieties or red wine and spice-soaked pear with goat’s cheese ice cream. The ice cream is definitely one to try, with a sweet and creamy taste much like cheesecake. Desserts are priced at about £4 to £7.
The Drink
The obvious complement for cheese is wine and there’s a long list to pick from which is rotated frequently depending on the cheese that’s in season. Wines are offered from the main French vineyards - Bourdeaux, Alsace, Pays de Loire etc. - and are priced from about £18 and up. You can also round off your meal with a tipple of French liqueur.
The Last Word
Take yourself to France and back in this intimate cheese paradise where you can enjoy sharing simple cheese dishes with your closest friends. Just be sure to book and save room for dessert!
