The ViewLondon Review
A simple, understated restaurant located in the heart of London, which boasts a sublime, Italian menu focusing on fresh ingredients and subtle flavours.
The Venue
Those who wish to escape the hectic pace of the West End should visit Latium as it benefits from a quiet side-street location - moments away from Oxford Street.
This restaurant offers unrivalled service in a simple yet elegant setting. The focus of Latium is fine food – without the fuss of pretentious design aesthetics.
The Atmosphere
The atmosphere is formal, yet relaxed. The staff will ensure that customers are well informed and will assist with any questions or recommendations. This is the perfect venue for an intimate meal – with flattering lighting and a low, comfortable hum of activity - conversation is effortless.
The Food
Dining at Latium isn’t an experience to be rushed - take time out to savour each dish. First you’ll be presented with a basket containing a variety of freshly baked bread, juicy olives and zesty olive oil, followed by a small plate of Italian appetizers, such as miniature arrancini – little deep fried risotto balls with mozzarella – which are light and delicious.
The scallop and prawn cocktail makes an excellent light starter, with fresh tasting seafood and a subtle Marie-rose style sauce. Beef tartar with poached quail’s eggs is a slightly more adventurous option, which has a wonderful consistency and well-seasoned fresh meat.
The veal encased in radicchio is a slightly disappointing main; the leaves were very bitter and definitely not to everyone’s taste, but the meat itself was lovely and tender. However, the lemon and ricotta ravioli with tomato and basil sauce is simply delicious. The zesty citrus taste combines perfectly with the mild cheese flavour, creating a superb dish.
For dessert, try the chocolate and almond tart with amaretto sauce - the marriage between the sweet nutty sauce and chocolate works exceptionally well. Also make sure to request a plate of homemade truffles favoured with cardamom, cinnamon, and coconut…divine!
The Drink
The light and easy-to-drink prosecco makes an ideal apertif. There is also a large selection of fine wines, spirits and liqueurs. The house white wine is sharp and clean and combines well with pasta dishes. To finish, try a sweet dessert wine or sharp limoncello - a tangy lemon liqueur with a moreish, bitter edge.
The Last Word
This is fine Italian dining at its very best. The service and quality of food is impeccable and the passion for food here can be seen in every dish…
