Le Montmartre does classic French dishes as well as anywhere I have been. I have been several times and have always been extremely happy, some standout dishes include the Coquilles St. Jacques (Scallops in a mushroom/cream/champagne sauce), Cassoulet, and the Steak Frites is amazing. It seems to be a family run place and has a nice atmosphere, I heartily recommend it to anyone. I am glad to see they have taken the scaffolding down off the building so I hope everyone who passes by on the Essex Road will notice it now.
I have been in 33 countries in my life and I have tryed many good or bad meals. But what I eat in Montmartre is amazing! Very good quality of the food.Everything is cooked fresh. The main chef who is the owner of the restaurant is the pearl there. He and the rest of the staff are very friendly. I felt like a queen there. It is very nice small place, just 10min fast walk from Angel tube station. You have to look very carefuly for the sign Montmartre as you can easily miss the place. The prices are very good (not too expencive) and the portions are big.Sometimes when I order my favourite hot starter (Scallops with souce of champane and greated special cheese) the portion is enaugh big for me to serve me as a main course also. When we go there with my friends - we usualy have some starter and main course and we don,t have more space for the desserts. I I'm planning to invite before New year other 10friends of mine. Once you try the great Rabbit stew with prunes or the Duck legs stew you will never forget it. I red once that some woman didn,t like much the rubbit. It looks that she is not into rabbit at all and on that point probably she shouldn,t order such a food on the first place. You can,t order a rabbit and to expect it to smell like a pork steak or like a chicken stew)))) Even nobody to tell you in advance how many awards this chef has for his great cooking skills - you will fee it when you test his food.I wish I could eat there every day but it is little bit far from my house.I strongly recomend to all the viewers to go there and try the food.Such a good food probably you can eat in some 5-star hotel restaurant or on expensive luxurious cruise. This chef is of that high quality. The staff is very helpfull and friendly.
I brought once one of my customers. He tried the Scallops and later the steak. He was so happy in the end!He asked the waitress which one is the most expensive champane they have.He bought 1 bottle-140GBP and gave it to the chef as a present
I am from Eastern Europe. I enjoyed the very good quality of food. The stafff is very helpful. The wine is nice as well. I have been in Montmartre just couple of times but I am planning to go more often there with my friends in the new year.
Once you try this great food - you will become addicted to it. I promise you))))
It is not too expensive and there is a big menu. This sort of food you can,t find in every normal restaurant. I think that the choice of the chef what to put in the menu is great. All the staf made me feel good and welcome. It is very cozy atmosphere with nice music as background. I don,t like loud places. I am very, VERY impressed by the cuisine in this place and the politeness of the staff.
I stumbled upon this restarant by chance as i was walking down Essex Rd late one Sunday evening about a month ago. I am a bit conscientious about going into places that I don't know and asking for a 'table for one' but I was welcomed with a lovely smile from the waitress and instantly made to feel at home.
I love steak and chips so when I saw the steak 'perigourdine' in a fois gras and port sauce with fries my mind was automatically made up! I was pleasantly surprised as the generously sized rib eye was cooked perfectly to order (rare to medium) and the plentiful brown sauce was rich and tasty. A generous amount of fries accompanied the steak in a large bowl and they are very good indeed (some of the best I have tasted anywhere), a fresh golden colour, nice and crisp on the outside and soft in the middle and great when left to soak in some of the lovely brown sauce! On top of the steak was a small slice of fois gras pate which just melts in the mouth (and is made in-house). I washed down my steak with a reasonably priced large glass of house red and left feeling full and very satisfied for under £20.
I have returned 3 times since then and each time ordered the same dish! I even spoke to the French chef/owner about the brown sauce as I would love to replicate this at home and he gave me some tips on how to go about it (although making homemade veal stock for the base sauce might be pushing my culinary abilities somewhat!) .
If you live in the upper street/essex road area I would definitely give it a try.
This review is of course only based on one dish sampled 4 times but it was consistent which is a very good sign and bodes well for the other items on the menu which I look forward to trying. In fact I mentioned to the very pleasant waitress that the next time I will be determined to try something different. She knows the menu very well and recommended that I try the lamb next time which I will gladly do!
My wife and I had a meal at montmartre bistro last saturday night . the portions were large and the food was of high standard. I had the beef bourguignon stew with mash and enjoyed it very much. My wife had the chicken with prawns and enjoyed it too. We will return to montmartre soon to sample other dishes.
I was quite excited when Montmartre moved to Essex Road. I was hoping that it would be a good local restaurant that I could go to regularly as it's only 5 mins from my flat. Unfortunately I was disappointed. I had the rabbit stewed in olives and tomatoes but there was no flavour to it. It tasted like the rabbit had been introduced to the sauce a few minutes before serving. The sauce was made of tinned chopped tomatoes which hadn't even been cooked long enough to break down a little. They had forgotten to add the olives to the dish and if there were any herbs in there I couldn't taste them. I thought of complaining about the olives but thought it was too late to add them at that stage. It was bland to put it mildly. The vegetables I ordered were worse - a portion of fairly ok cauliflower cheese and some stringy overcooked green beans which were inedible. My partner fared better with a fairly average steak and chips. I will be sticking to Le Mercury on Upper Street - a bit further to walk but cheaper and reliable.
