Booked a table over the net for 2. Found this really easy and managed to do it with only 5 days notice.
Arrived at 7.30pm on a saturday and found the downstair restaurant was half empty. not a very good sign. seated at a nice corner table with a good view. I have say that i was really disappointed, the food was alright but everything tasted the same. My starter was actually really lovely and light. My main was duck and this was very tough. For dessert we had cheese. The waiter just put the cheese down and didn't explain what they where and only gave 3 slices of bread for 2 people! We had to wait for our water and kept asking.
The waiters didn't really care and couldn't be bothered to give you any kind of friendly service.
I won't be going back and felt a little cheated by the bill of £150 for 2 people, to be honest my local restaurant is much better

The Picasso room at L'Escargot: Untrained, clumsy waiters and over-priced, poor quality, poor quantity food. Watch the water bill.

Never to be repeated. Awful.

We went to the Picasso Room as a pre-Christmas treat romantic treat (and becaue we'd been given a voucher for any of the White Star Line restaurants - a great idea!). Not an eyebrow raised over voucher usage, even in Picasso Room. A great atmosphere, intimate, romantic, well-lit and well-ventilated, even with the next table smoking throughout their meal (WHEN will they ban it?!). Good food, but didn't totally blow me away for the price of it (as for example Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant did). Would go again though.

I have eaten both upstairs and downstairs at L'Escargot. These 2 rooms are aimed at different clients, upstairs is more formal and expensive, downstairs, a bit less formal, menu not quite as exotic.

Nevertheless, both provide excellent dining. Downstairs, 22.50 quid (I think it is now) for a 2 course meal - great value - great flavours. I had a rich creamy lobster bisque - absolutely lovely, but I couldnt finish it all it was so flavoursome! That might sound bad to some people but I can assure you it wasn't, it showed generosity that you dont get in many restaurants today.

Similarly the beef stew (can't remember exactly what they called it), was thick, rich, with good amounts of meat and again very tasty.

Upstairs again excellent, not outright the best restaurant food in London (for me Ramsey's gourmet menu is the top), but still gets 5 stars.

Good service, good attention to detail (it annoys me when I get even slightly dirty cutlery or glasses, but no probs here). Great value, not too big (like another of MPWs places I could mention which I found v. disappointing). This place deserves your support!
