The ViewLondon Review
L’Eto Caffe has filled a void for London: it's not just a wonderful cake and coffee shop, but also a place for fresh, healthy food and endless fruity drinks and cocktails into the late evening.
The Venue
Walking by L’Eto Caffe, you can’t help but be hypnotised by the array of beautiful and glistening cakes, brownies and cookies on display behind the long window. And if you're too far away to see them, then the big grass letters on the display window will definitely grab your attention. Despite its fairly small size space isn't an issue thanks to a high golden ceiling, a big open kitchen and simple lighting - something that illuminates the chic, dark wooden floors, walls and seats which are brought to life with a bit of colour. This cafe truly epitomises the ‘what-you-see-is-what-you-get’ mantra, and in this case, you’ll want it all. Not only are cakes displayed but also everything that's on the daily-changing mains menu.
The Atmosphere
You can expect to see all sorts of people walking through the doors, from couples and mothers and daughters to singletons just wanting a treat to pass time. The staff are fantastically helpful and will happily suggest items to you with ample knowledge of the menu. Low level chill out music is played to keep a serene vibe going.
The Food
A daily changing menu for mains as well as plenty of cakes is reason enough to keep revisiting L’Eto Caffe. A mix and match policy goes on with the mains (£12.50 for one main and two salads) and portions are very generous, so you can expect to take some home. The paprika chicken is surprisingly moist, despite being reheated, and has a very bold smoky heat, similar to chorizo. The quinoa accompanying it works perfectly, as does the char-grilled vegetable salad which boasts an interesting twist thanks to the addition of peach. The blue cheese and vegetable quiche is indulgently creamy and soft inside with a strong cheese flavour that isn't overpowering.
To get in the summery mood, the mango salad is definitely worth trying, with its brilliant bright colours, juicy mango pieces and hint of heat at the end to give a nice clean finish. With around fifteen to choose from, picking a cake can become a bit of a predicament. The signature birdberry cake (£4.50) made without wheat flour and filled with sour cream between each layer, is an ideal choice for those not wanting the post-heaviness... or guilt. The other famed option, honey cake (£3.80) is simply delectable. Topped with crushed walnuts and filled with a light cream between each layer, it’s a delicate treat easily indulged in every day. Breakfast is also on offer here, from granola cereals to eggs Benedict and beyond.
The Drink
Not only are there make-your-own juice/smoothie options and rich coffees, L’Eto offers a wide range of fresh and colourful herbal and fruit teas – warm and cold. The passion fruit and jasmine ice tea (£3.50) is incredibly refreshing, with enough tartness to balance the sweet. A pot of custom tea (£4.50) easily serves two and arrives in a contemporary square see-through tea pot to show off the vibrant colours and ingredients. The passion, ginger and yellow berry tea is bright yellow and similar to a warm sweet juice but with the help of root ginger to give it a clean savoury end. The L’Eto Cocktail (£7.50) with gin and grapefruit is fantastically sharp, whilst the sweet strawberry caprioska (£7.50) with vodka is dangerously easy to drink on a warm summer's day or night.
Last Word
The all-day cafe has most definitely evolved with L’Eto: the food is made with the freshest ingredients, there's a wide mix of cuisine and it never falls short in flavour. And it's all available until late evening, offering something that other casual diners just don’t.
